When I look at the prodigious bat-s—t lunacy that seems to be the defining characteristic of the race for the 2012 GOP nomination, I find myself in abject disbelief. Surely, I keep thinking, no sane, rational person would fall for such unmedicated silliness. And yet, the mainstream media continues covering the three-ring circus as if the Republican field is actually serious and credible. It’s as if the center of sanity has shifted, and what was once deemed insane is now considered normal. Personally, I wouldn’t trust ANY of the GOP candidates (with the possible, though still very unlikely, exception of Jon Huntsman) to manage a Dairy Queen, much less lead the (at least in our own minds) most powerful nation on the face of the planet.
When Michele Bachmann’s every brain-dead utterance, Rick Perry’s every intellectual meltdown, Herman Cain’s every self-serving messianic rant, and Rick Santorum’s every uber-Jesus-y moralizing episode of verbal vomit is considered newsworthy…. How is it even possible to have a reasoned, rational discussion when the protagonists are versed in neither reason nor rationality? And what does it say about the American Sheeple when around a third of voters will support a Republican no matter how addled, craven, and/or dishonest the eventual nominee is?
I do believe there’s such a thing as “Too Stupid To Vote”, though I’m not about to advocate that I be granted the responsibility of throwing those stones. Still, if you can’t be bothered to think critically, if you make decisions emotionally, if you get your information from Fox Noise Channel…how about doing the right thing and turn over your voter registration card voluntarily? You clearly can’t be bothered to do the work of making informed, rational decisions, so how about leaving to the people who are willing to think instead of react?
