More than any other time in history, mankind faces a crossroads. One path leads to despair and utter hopelessness. The other, to total extinction. Let us pray we have the wisdom to choose correctly.
- Woody Allen
For the past three years, we’ve seen what can happen when we elect an anti-democratic coterie of Right-wing zealots concerned with one thing first, last, and always: political power. Congratulations, America; you continue voting against your own best interests, and the results continue to be progressively worse and more egregious. I’m not going to put forward the theorem that Democrats are the cure to all that ails us; they have their own problems (beginning with a lack of cojones). Nonetheless, Democrats are at least marginally more committed to furthering democracy and the interests of the majority of Americans.
In about 10 1/2 months, America gets to decide: do we want to be a nation that takes away, that marginalizes and oppresses those we hate and despise? Or do we want to be a nation possessed of compassion and the willingness to care for others, including those whose theology, ideology, lifestyle, and/or sexual orientation we may disagree with? Will we choose to follow the teachings of Ayn Rand? Or will we choose to live by the teachings of the Jesus Christ so many profess to revere?
I can only pray (well, I would if I believed in prayer) that Americans will find the wherewithal to pay attention and choose wisely. We may not have another opportunity.
