Today in sports....

I normally try not to write about sports, but every now and again, I run across a few stories that seems less superficial and meaningless than most sports stories. So it was this week….

Brandon Roy retires after doctor tells Trail Blazers guard that long-term health risk is too highYes, I suppose it’s sad that Roy is retiring from the NBA at 27. Still, he’s set for life financially and he has a family that loves him. Really, how bad can things be, eh? So he has no cartilage in his knees; selfishlessly, he’s concerned about being able to walk later in life. Go figure.

David Stern vetoes New Orleans proposed trade of Chris Paul to the L.A. Lakers. Thanks to the Commissioner for notifying the basketball world that intelligence and hard work are sometimes completely beside the point. Even though the Laker’s management made smart moves, did the right things in the right way, and put itself in position to make the trade, if enough owners whine and complain, Stern will step in. Evidently, in the NBA, David Stern’s personal playground, you really CAN be too smart for your own good. Especially when Stern is willing to cave to whiny mediocrities like Cleveland Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert.

Cleveland Browns QB was leveled by a helmet-to-helmet hit, practically convulsed on the ground…and was put back into the game three plays later. So much for the NFL and it’s commitment to the health and safety of its players. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy? What’s that…and how is it going to help us win football games? The more things change…the more players suffer permanent, sometimes debilitating brain damage.

Albert Pujols signed with the L.A. Angels for a boatload of money. Ten years? $340 quadrillion?? People in St. Louis feeling deceived, betrayed, and Lebron-ed?? Yeah, it sucks, but I have a very simple message: it’s a business. Albert Pujols made a business decision. Period. How many of us wouldn’t do exactly the same thing if faced with the same deicision? Besides, if your choice was between staying in St. Louis or moving to L.A….well, I don’t know about you, but the moving vans couldn’t get hear fast enough. Deal with it.

Kris Humphries’s Worst Year Ever Culminates In “KRIS IS GAY!” Tabloid Cover. Man, it has got to suck to be Kris Humphries these days. Then again, it’s difficult to imagine that he was completely ignorant of the asylum he was marrying into.

Jerry Sandusky’s Wife Issues Statement On “False Accusations,” Says She “Continues To Believe” In Husband’s InnocenceSo it’s true? Denial really is more than just a really big river in Egypt? Or perhaps Mrs. Sandusky simply can’t fathom the horrific reality that her husband is a monster who sexually preys on children. I can’t say that I blame her for not wanting to face reality and admit that her life has been a lie and that many children have suffered at the hands of the man she loves. Part of me thinks she had to know all along but simply couldn’t find the strength and the moral courage to confront her husband.
