In Soviet Russia, bad food finds you

Burger King Holdings Inc., the operator of 7,500 fast-food restaurants in the U.S. and Canada, is trying out delivery service at some stores in Virginia and Maryland as a possible way to boost sales…. Available from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., deliveries cost $2 and there is a minimum order of $8 to $10, depending on the market, according to Burger King’s website. The restaurant, whose rivals include McDonald’s Corp. and Wendy’s Co., is delivering meals such as 40-piece chicken tenders and two bottled drinks for $10.99 and four large sandwich combos for $23.99.

Don’tcha just LOVE America? I mean, where else can you consume quadruple your normal daily requirement of sodium, fat, and calories…without even leaving your parents’ basement? On the one hand, I suppose this is the next logical step from drive-through lanes, right? After all, if you can’t be bothered to get out of your car to get your food, how can you be expected to leave your home for massive amounts of fat and calories in the form of bad fried food?

Currently, Burger King is only delivering in four cities in Virginia and Maryland, but the service will expand to 16 cities by January 23rd. The company isn’t yet saying whether the delivery service will eventually go nationwide…but I think I’ll be passing on this opportunity if and/or when it ever comes to Portland. At least one reviewer thinks that Burger King might be on to something.

I suppose the argument could be made that this idea is really little different from ordering a pizza, which isn’t exactly health food, either. Fast food, after all, is predicated on the idea of speed and convenience, not nutritional value. What could be more convenient than someone bringing a Whopper and fries to your front door? Yep, now it’ll be even easier and more convenient to speed down the expressway to obesity and heart disease.

Yay, America!!! ;-)
