Yeah, but I'll bet Butterball's still trying to sell Muslim turkeys

CHARLESTON, South Carolina — Former Oklahoma congressman and Newt Gingrich-endorser J.C. Watts conceded late last week that despite his state’s push to ban Sharia law, it has never actually existed in the Sooner State. Gingrich has a long history of Islamophobic statements, from calling supporters of a mosque in New York City “hostile to our civilization” to saying that he would only support Muslim presidential candidates if “they would commit in public to give up Sharia.” This last statement earned approval from notable anti-Muslim pseudoexpert Frank Gaffney, who declared on his radio show that “Newt Gingrich has, in my judgment, rendered a real public service.”

THIS JUST IN FROM THE WWJD TULSA BUREAU: SHARIA NOT SPOTTED IN OKLAHOMA. Film @ 11….

I never cease to be amazed at the lengths that some Christocrats on the Right will go in order to sow division and spread fear and hatred in an effort to ensure that their misguided fear-based agenda prevails. To think that Sharia is anything even remotely close to a threat in The Redneck State Oklahoma is beyond absurd. I’d wager that most Oklahomans couldn’t even elucidate what Sharia is. This hasn’t stopped Oklahomans from voting to pass a law that would ban Sharia (It’s Muslim, so it must be something horrible, right? I mean, don’t they hate us for our freedom…or something?)

Thankfully, it appears that the fine, upstanding Christian folk of Oklahoma can rest easy. There’s no Sharia to be found anywhere in the state…because good, God-fearing, patriotic Christian Republicans are ever-vigilant and committed to protecting White Christians those who love Jesus from the evils of Islamofascism. Y’all are just going to have to find something- or someone- else to hate.

Tolerance: it feels like it’s a dirty word in Oklahoma…perhaps because it is.

(BTW…the title’s an homage to Pamela Geller and Bryan Fischer, neither of whom could be accused of being the poster children for tolerance and charity. Rock on….)
