Not so very long ago, several GOP-controlled state legislatures mandated that contraceptive coverage be available to every insured woman in their state. No one raised much of an objection, even on the Right, because it seemed the right and decent thing to do. When you consider that 98% of American women use birth control of some flavor, few things could seem less controversial than mandating contraceptive coverage…right? Mike Huckabee even signed a mandate into law when he was Governor of Arkansas.
Well, that was then. Now, any Republican with any hope at all of electoral success this fall is absolutely, incontrovertibly, steadfastly, over-my-dead-body opposed to mandating contraceptive coverage. Why? Because the black man in the White House President Obama promulgated the policy on the federal level. As any REAL, patriotic, Christian American knows, if Barack Obama did it, it’s evil, sick, anti-American, and anti-Christian (Why does the President hate the baby Jesus??). Any idea, concept, or policy initiative put forward by the Obama Administration is by definition…wait for it…SOCIALISM!!!!…and a threat to the religious freedom of all Americans. Why? Because propaganda’s a wonderful thing, that’s why.
That’s about as close to a coffee-spew moment as I’m going to get today, but any reasonable person would have to be stunned by the rank hypocrisy in play here. What the GOP strongly supported just a few short years ago, they now MOST CERTAINLY AND WITH ALL DUE CONVICTION UNALTERABLY OPPOSE.
Yeah, right.
Remember, they’ll tell you it’s about standing up to a clear and present danger to the religious freedom and liberty of all Americans. It’s actually all (and only) about the GOP’s lust for power and their willingness to do and/or say whatever it takes to defeat Barack Obama. Hypocrisy and duplicity are just tools in the GOP toolbox.
This is what happens when your partisanship far outweighs your patriotism.
