Susan G. Komen for the Cure: Because breast cancer is a business...and business is GOOD

(video via Brian Kane)

BOYCOTT SUSAN B. KOMEN FOR THE CURE…GO TO CHARITY NAVIGATOR TO DETERMINE WHERE YOUR MONEY CAN DO THE MOST GOOD…OR YOU CAN GO HERE TO DONATE DIRECTLY TO PLANNED PARENTHOOD

One Planned Parenthood clinic does more in a day to prevent abortions than the entire Pro-Life movement does in a year.

I’ve made no secret of my feelings regarding Susan G. Komen for the Cure, though I suspect my advocating a boycott may be falling on deaf ears. If that’s the case, it’s too bad, because we’re missing a golden opportunity to relegate perhaps the most corrupt non-profit in America to the scrap heap of history. If you don’t believe me, you could watch Pink Ribbons, Inc.. If the trailer is indication, this documentary isn’t exactly an homage to the dedication, selflessness, and openness of spirit exhibited by Nancy Brinker, et. al.

Pink Ribbons, Inc. was produced by the National Film Board of Canada, so I suspect finding at your neighborhood cineplex may be a tall order. I also suspect that Komen may well throw its considerable weight around in an effort to prevent people from being exposed to what may well be the truth. Komen has turned breast cancer into a business, and business is very, very good. The problem here is that the organization Nancy Brinker started to honor the memory of her late sister has lost its way. Thirty years years, Komen has sullied the name of Brinker’s sister through inefficiency, misapplication of donor funds, and political activism.

Don’t get me wrong; I freely acknowledge that Komen has done many good things over the years. It’s focused attention on women’s health and the war against breast cancer in a way no other organization has managed. Somewhere along the way, though, Komen passed from being a non-profit charity to a business. The last available figures indicate that only 81.5% of donor money actually made it to programs. The rest went to Komen’s bloated administrative structure and lack of fiscal discipline.

When your CEO flies first class, stays in the best hotels, and eats in four-star restaurants on Komen’s dime…and when a large number of executives make in excess of $100k/year, something is horribly out of whack. It’s time for Komen to go the way of the buffalo, though I suspect they may well manage to propagandize Americans into once again believing that pink actually represents the war against breast cancer.
