When fascism comes to America, it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.
- Sinclair Lewis
I can think of no greater example of rampant hypocrisy than what I hear when I listen to Republican Presidential candidates bleating about “freedom” and “liberty.” It’s hypocrisy because their words belie the reality behind their propaganda. When they talk about “freedom” and “liberty”, what they’re referring to are the interests of wealthy Conservative White males. If you’re a woman…well, Republicans want your vote, but they clearly don’t trust you to make decisions regarding your reproductive functions.
So…do what you’re told, vote Republican, and hie thy barefoot seld back to the kitchen….
We’ve entered a period in which one political party clearly, if not admittedly, defines women as sperm receptacles and the property of men. Rick Santorum, who, depending on which set of numbers you believe, may or may not be the front-runner, makes no bones about being a throwback…to what evidently is the 17th century. You know, the time when adulterers were stoned or forced to wear scarlet letters, and when men were the unquestioned authority figures (and women couldn’t even vote).
If Santorum lived in Saudi Arabia, he’d undoubtedly be an arch-Conservative Wahhabi mullah. Here in the US, he’s running for President with an eye toward turning back the clock on women’s rights. Except for Santorum, it’s difficult to really know if the other candidates believe anything close to what he does or if they’re simply falling into line with a party that appears to have lost its freakin’ mind. If you’re a woman and you think that voting for Santorum or the other Republican moral reprobates is a reasonable idea, I’d submit that you’re acquiescing to your own subjugation.
This must be why I keep having flashbacks from The Handmaid’s Tale….
