Today's dispatch from the attic

Rick Santorum is surging; be sure to bring plenty of hand sanitizer and paper towels.

I understand that religious institutions generally enjoy tax-exempt status because they’re required to refrain from overt political activity. There’s a very fine and fungible line in place, I suppose, but if a religious institution- like, f’rinstance, the Catholic Church- is openly and overtly engaging in political advocacy and/or activism, how can it continue claiming tax-exempt status? And why isn’t the Justice Department and/or the Treasury pursuing this issue with greater zeal?

What’s the difference between Rick Santorum and Mitt Romney? One is trying to buy what he can’t earn, the other’s trying to earn what he can’t buy. I’ll leave it up to you to figure out into which slots Little Ricky and our Vulture-Capitalist-in-Chief fit.

Mitt Romney won the CPAC straw poll…so now it’s a straight line to the Oval Office, no? Well, uh…no. Am I the only one seeing the hilarity in the GOP’s presumptive nominee being someone that most Republicans hate with a fiery passion that cannot be quenched?

OMG…I just LOVE watching Republicans eat their young. Don’t you??

GOP backpedals on payroll fight. So, what does that headline tell you? How about that if you stand up to Republican bullies, they will eventually back off when they realize that:

A. they don’t have the numbers to enforce their will, and B. you’re not going to be intimidated by their bloviating and empty threats.

If only the Obama Administration had learned that lesson in…oh, I don’t know…2009??

VIRGINIA IS FOR HATERS.. There; I think that pretty much says it all.

I look forward to the day when this sort of thing is neither remarkable nor necessary, but for now I’ll applaud Gov. Christine Gregoire, who signed legislation legalizing same-sex marriage in Washington State. It’s sad that we as a people have to take such steps to ensure that a minority class enjoys a right the majority takes for granted, but here we are.

Regardless of what the GOP and the Tea Party would have us believe, there are two things driving our growing debt:

  • Tax cuts
  • Wars

IF the GOP and the Tea Party were serious about reducing the debt, they’d be all over the two main culprits. Of course, the fact that they’re not ought to tell you everything you need to know about how serious they aren’t. Move along, people…no hypocrisy here.

From the “OMG…I LOVE CAPITALISM!!” Dept.: You had to know that this was coming, right? Sony Profiteering Off Whitney Houston’s Death. It just wouldn’t be American capitalism if Sony didn’t take advantage of the profit opportunities presented by Houston’s tragic demise. I’d bet they’d feel guilty about it…if they weren’t so busy counting the money they’re raking in.

Hey, you know what? If you’re a woman in the military, you should EXPECT to be raped. It’s your own damned fault. Fox News talking head Liz Trotta says so.
