Memo to Conservatives: Condescion and smug arrogance do not a convincing argument make

The above tweet was a response I received in reaction to some of my tweets and blog posts about the passing of Andrew Breitbart. It was something close to a coffee spew moment; did this person honestly think I should be ashamed or embarrassed to be a Liberal? Are my beliefs something I should hide because REAL Americans think Liberals are silly, clueless fools who can’t understand facts because we don’t watch Fox Noise Channel? Yes, unlike some, I prefer to get my news from someone other than Steve Doocy, Sean Hannity, or Megyn Kelly (you know; actual journalists)…’cuz I like facts with my news, not ideology and propaganda. I’m kinda funny that way.

I’m always amused at Conservatives who think that their beliefs make them smarter, better, and more patriotic. It’s as if they really do believe that God’s a Republican, and that as a Liberal Democrat I’m in the fast lane on the Expressway to Hell. I may well be…but it’s not because I’m a Liberal

The problem with people like this is they mistake smug arrogance for a convincing and unassailable argument. It’s like they think that being absolutely convinced of their own certitude and the obvious moral superiority of their dogma means God is on their side. How could anyone so convinced of their own correctness possibly be wrong?

Don’t get me wrong; I recognize that there are plenty of good, decent, well-meaning Conservatives out there willing to have a reasoned, rational debate. Then there are people like Zuppering, who substitute smugness and arrogance for facts and logic. He’s absolutely convinced that, as I’m a Liberal, ergo I’m by definition incorrect.

All I’m going to offer as a defense is a request that you look around. An honest observer will recognize that it’s not Liberals who are responsible for the mess this country is in. Conservatives spent eight years mucking things up, and then once they were out of power, they exerted themselves mightily to obstruct a Democratic President at every turn. Granted, Democrats haven’t exactly covered themselves with glory when it comes to fortitude and moral courage, but we didn’t drive the bus into the ditch.

We’re not the ones obstructing every effort to do something positive. We’re not the ones waging war on women. We’re not the ones working overtime to advance the interests of the wealthiest at the expense of the vast majority. We’re not the ones waging the culture war when there are legitimate, intractable issues in this country demanding attention.

Honestly, If I were you , Zuppering, I’d be embarrassed about my Conservatism…and I’d be doing everything I could to dampen it. But you’re not listening, because you’re just smug and arrogant enough to be impervious to fact and reality. Good luck with that culture war thing….
