Sex: If you're not having it (and even if you are), you don't get to control what others do

Despite Rush Limbaugh’s efforts, college students continue slutting it up! Their latest bit of scandalous whoremongering: a “Sex Fest” at Pennsylvania’s Allegheny College. Luckily, the right-wing media is on the case, spreading misinformation about this alleged college bacchanal.

One of the things that consistently amazes me about Social Conservatives is their fascination/obsession with the sex lives of other people. That some folks, particularly the young ‘uns, continue to treat sex as something enjoyable and not dirty, sinful, and disgusting, seems to be a constant source of consternation for the preternaturally uptight.

(Fundamentalism (n.)- The fear that someone somewhere is enjoying life, and, even worse, experiencing pleasure through recreational sex.)

Allegheny College in Pennsylvania hosted a “Sex Fest” recently. By all indications, it was intended to be a fairly low key event, “a night of food, fun, and games as well as important information about sexual health.” Most rational people would think that such a “Sex Fest” provided students an opportunity to learn about the importance protecting and safeguarding their sexual health. Sadly, some of those who decided their opinions about Sex Fest mattered even more were decidedly irrational. As far as Ron Meyer of CNS News is concerned, Sex Fest was an invitation for students to copulate like bunny rabbits.

I’m still trying to figure out what the problem with that idea could possibly be.

Like Slutwalk, SexFest is likely to persuade students to be promiscuous without having to consider the consequences by treating sex as a form of entertainment.

Even though this event that has been featured at a number of campuses across the country, such as Ithaca College, St. Mary’s College of Maryland and University of Massachusetts at Dartmouth, Allegheny shouldn’t want to add its name to the list. One message these events don’t advertise is that sexual activity could lead to…STDs! Therefore, what is promoted as an event for sexual health awareness could actually encourage an overall unhealthy environment.

While Meyer is free to his ignorance opinion, I really feel sorry for him. I realize that for people like Meyer, sex is a dirty, nasty chore and a grim duty necessary to ensure that propagation of the species. Still, some heathens (like me, f’rinstance) really rather enjoy sex. I, for one, see nothing wrong with the idea of sex as entertainment or recreation. Yes, some folks view sex as a purely procreative undertaking, and that the idea of sex as recreation is evil, sinful, and dirty. I’ve never had children, nor do I have any plans to do so in the future; does that ipso facto mean that I have no right to continue having sex, since doing so for recreation and enjoy is sinful and dirty?

Given the health risks potentially faced by those who are sexually active, it stands to reason that education and knowledge can only be a good thing…because it save lives. The only thing nasty, dirty, and sinful about sex is the attitude harbored by so many deeply uptight and self-righteous people. When it comes to STDs, silence really does equal death. There’s absolutely no reason that sex between consenting adults can’t be a safe and enjoyable undertaking- but thought needs to be put into it and appropriate precautions taken. Ignorance of reality makes it no less real.

Here’ a pro tip: If you think sex is dirty, nasty, and sinful, then don’t engage in it. That’s where the utility and value of your opinion and input ends. You have no right to demand that others abstain or engage in sex only with an eye towards procreation. Sex is a beautiful and wonderful thing, in all its flavor, derivations, and varieties. Those who appreciate and enjoy sex should be allowed to do so with interference from or condemnation by those uptight, self-righteous, and conceited enough to believe they have the right to force their narrow prejudices on others.

Get over yourself, and lose the self-righteous conviction that your narrow hyper-religiosity trumps all. No one likes an arrogant, intolerant know-it-all, knowhutimean??
