Propaganda 101: How Conservatives successfully flip a legitimate issue into a "scandal"

Given new fuel by former Obama administration official Melody Barnes’ condemnation of comedian Bill Maher’s controversial remarks on Ann Romney, liberal bloggers dismissed Democratic strategist Hilary Rosen’s comments about Romney’s decision to be a stay-at-home mother as a phony scandal. The chatter generated by Rosen’s comments was a “totally fake controversy about ‘stay at home moms’ drummed up by the Republican Party,” wrote Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs…. “False ‘outrage,’” was how Lowkell at Blue Virginia characterized it.

OK, so here’s the deal: Republicans have succeeded in turning Hillary Rosen’s legitimate criticism of Ann Romney into a (OMG!!!!) SCANDAL!!!!

THIS JUST IN- DEMOCRATS…AND OUR KENYAN MUSLIM SOCIALIST PRESIDENT…HATE WORKING WOMEN!!! THEY THINK MOTHERHOOD ISN’T WORK!!! OH, THE HORROR!! OH, THE HUMANITY!!

It’s a load of crap designed to deflect attention from the real issue- the GOP’s war on women…and it’s working. Here’s a few things that this faux scandal should have made crystal clear:

  1. Republicans are far more skilled at deflecting criticism and creating a “scandal” than they are at addressing legitimate issues.

  2. Mitt Romney is about working women in the same way Ozzie Guillen is about declining comment on the virtues of Fidel Castro.

  3. Democrats are a collection of spineless weenies in desperate need of growing a pair.

  4. Mitt Romney has said that poor women who stay home to raise their children should not receive benefits. It’s all about “the dignity of work,” don’tchaknow??

  5. If Ann Romney’s child-raising experience is representative of American mothers…well, then I’m the Queen of England.

  6. How the GOP thinks they can survive angering the female 53% of the electorate simply defies rational explanation.

  7. The GOP’s war on women is real…and it defies every law of political physics.

The Sturm und Drang generated by Republicans propagandists is designed to do one thing and one thing only: deflect attention from their very real and aggressive war against women. While American women and families are looking for help in surviving the recession, Republicans are focusing on abortion and turning back the clock on women’s rights. It’s silly, it’s counter-productive, and their actions speak for themselves. They can trot out Ann Romney all they want, but it’s not going to change the undeniable reality facing the female 53% of the electorate: Republicans want women to vote for GOP candidates…then shut up and let the men do the heavy lifting.

It will be interesting to see what happens in November, eh?
