Uh...that wasn't a chicken empanada

Three people in Brazil killed and ate at least three women as a ritual of their religious sect. The cannibals, who have confessed to the crime, say that a voice told them to kill evil women. It’s unclear if the voice also told them to use the extra human meat to stuff empanadas, which they then sold to their unwitting neighbors…. As horrifying as the murders and cannibalism are, surely the worst part of this story is the empanadas — first because the neighbors had no idea they were eating people, and second, because the killers actually made money selling the empanadas. The fact that they got their neighbors to pay to help them get rid of the bodies just adds insult to injury.

The next time you’re sitting down to a meal at your favorite Brazilian restaurant, you might just want to think twice about ordering the chicken empanadas. If you insist or ordering one, you’ll want to verify that what you’re getting is actually chicken.

Certainly, the idea of deceiving customers into unwitting cannibalism is revolting on many levels…but it’s tough not to admire the creativity and cojones behind the empanadas. Not only did the murderers find a creative way to dispose of evidence, but their customers unknowingly paid for the privilege. (There’s a joke in there about Republicans and capitalism…but I’ll let that one be….)

I suppose this would be a strong arguing for the need to license street food vendors, eh??
