It's easy to hate those whom you can't be bothered to understand

Parishioners at North Carolina’s Providence Road Baptist Church have come to the defense of Pastor Charles L. Worley, days after video footage of him delivering a viciously homophobic sermon went viral in the blogosphere….. “So he had every right to say what he said about putting them in a pen and feeding them,” Providence Road Baptist Church member Geneva Sims tells NBC news affiliate WCNC. “The Bible says they are worthy of death. He only preaches the word…God made Adam and Eve, not Adam and Steve.”…. Adds member Stacey Pritchard: “Sometimes you’ve got to be scared straight. He is trying to save those people from going to hell.”

It was disturbing enough that Pastor Charles L. Worley, in all seriousness and with no hint of irony, proposed putting homosexuals into pens and essentially letting them die off. Even more distressing was the news that some of Worley’s petitioners are defending his hateful, bigoted lunacy.

I have to assume that it’s only a minority of North Carolinians who are so virulently anti-gay that they’d see nothing wrong with herding homosexuals into pens like cattle and allowing them to expire. Then again, a majority of North Carolina voters did pass a measure that will enshrine hatred and discrimination in the Tar Heel State’s constitution. And North Carolina does seem to be the epicenter of crazy & hateful these days.

Draw your own conclusions, I suppose….

It’s easy to hate when you can be bothered to understand anything about that which you so virulently oppose. Hey, it’s not like Gays and Lesbians are real people, right?

[F]ar too many clenched conservatives have yet to experience any sort of backsplash from their own inbred homophobia and misogyny; they have no gay relative, co-worker, or friend who’s been abused and abandoned by the hateful laws the GOP enacts. They have yet to befriend a needful young female who’s been denied a cancer screening or basic health care due to their state’s trashing of Planned Parenthood. After all, it’s always easy to drop bombs when you never have to see the charred bodies on the ground.

I’m astonished at the amount of effort and energy that so many put into hating people whose only “crime” is wanting to be left alone to live and love as they see fit. People who honestly consider themselves to be good, God-fearing Christians see nothing wrong with advocating the death of those who happen not to think, believe, live, and love as they do. Somehow, they seem incapable of recognizing the hateful hypocrisy that has nothing to do with Christianity and everything to do with be repulsed by homosexuality.

If you’re repulsed by homosexuality, if you think it’s wrong, then I have a very simple solution to offer: DON”T HAVE A SAME-SEX RELATIONSHIP. Why would you think that your hatred of those who mean you no harm and largely just want to be left alone?

Or are you so uncertain about and afraid of your own sexuality that you feel you must destroy anything and anyone who reminds you of that fear and uncertainty?
