“I figured a way to get rid of all the lesbians and queers, but I couldn’t get it passed through Congress,” Pastor Charles L. Worley of the Maiden-based Providence Road Baptist Church (“the Home of old time Religion”) told his congregation during last week’s Sunday sermon…. “Build a great, big, large fence - 50 or 100 mile long - put all the lesbians in there,” he continued. “Fly over and drop some food. Do the same thing with the queers and the homosexuals, and have that fence electrified ‘til they can’t get out… And you know what, in a few years, they’ll die out. Do you know why? They can’t reproduce.”
There are times I feel sorry for those Christians who endeavor to lead Christ-like lives…because they so often have to bear the burden of being associated with knuckle-dragging Neanderthal “Christians” like Charles L. Worley. I don’t know what it is that Worley is cooking these days, but it’s much about Christianity as Jeffrey Dahmer was about vegetarianism.
Starving and killing Gays: It’s What Jesus Would Do. Right; remind me again where it says that in the Bible??
It’s one thing to despise a minority class of people because you happen to detest and/or be revolted by their lifestyle, but it takes someone truly inhuman to suggest something akin to “The Final Solution.” Rev. Worley considers himself to be a man of God…and yet he seems to know little and understand even less of the teachings of the Jesus Christ he claims to revere and worship. Completely absent in Worley’s message is any measure of love, compassion, or tolerance- all things that Christ taught and that are central to Christianity. Worley is to Christianity what Paul Ryan is to the Social Contract.
When you use your faith to justification ignorance, hatred, and a desire to destroy those you perceive as other, lesser human being, you’ve descended to a dark and evil place. I don’t believe that a majority of Christians are ignorant, narrow-minded homophobes consumed by hatred and zealotry. Far from it. Nor do I believe that foaming-at-the-mouth malice and vitriol are hardly the sole purview of Christianity. I do have to wonder, though, why so few good and decent Christians speak out against haters like Worley. Why do so many tolerate zealots like Worley when it’s clear they understand as much of the teachings of Jesus Christ as I do about nuclear fusion?
Why so many are so concerned with how others live and love is something I’m struggling (and clearly failing) to understand. As loathe as I am to play the Nazi card, Worley’s proposal seems not so very far removed from Hitler’s “Final Solution.”
Christians are better than this…so are y’all rising up in condemnation hatred and homophobia masquerading as Christianity? Why do y’all tolerate someone like Worley twisting the teachings of Jesus Christ into something unrecognizable? You can’t complain about the way Christians are viewed and treated if you stand by mutely while zealots like Worley spread hatred and homophobia and pretend that they’re Christians. Or do you not concern yourself with things that don’t impact you directly?
