Today on "People Unclear On The Concept": Conservative humor and other oxymorons

Missouri State Rep. Wanda Brown is not the first Right-wing zealot that The Daily Show has ridiculed, nor is she likely to be the last. In virtually every case when I’ve seen one of these bits, I find myself asking the same question: “Why do these people agree to go on camera?” Do they not have cable? Are they completely unaware of what The Daily Show does? Are they suffering from a lack of common sense…or native intelligence? Do they not have a staff tasked with keeping them from embarrassing themselves?

If I was a Conservative- and thankfully, I’m not- I wouldn’t allow a camera crew from Comedy Central within a quarter-mile of me. Yet people like Rep. Brown willingly participate in an exercise designed primarily to hold them up to ridicule. How could they not know that the sole purpose of their appearing on camera is to be roundly ridiculed for their silliness, their hypocrisy, and/or whatever there particular crime against common sense and simple human decency happens to be.

Sometimes I wonder if zealous Conservatives like Brown simply lack even the most basic understanding of humor, rendering themselves incapable of recognizing when they’re the object of ridicule.

Here’s a recommendation for Conservatives: if you pick up your phone and the person on the other end identifies themselves as being from The Daily Show, just hang up the phone. Quickly. You can thank me later.
