Croatia took a vital three points from Ireland over the weekend, sending fans into spasms of joy and occasional nudity. Now two women face losing their jobs after photos of them baring their chests at Sunday’s match—including one of an Irish fan licking one woman’s breasts—have been seen by pretty much the entire internet. (Link very NSFW.)
You may or may not have noticed this, but Europe is all atwitter over Euro 2012, the European soccer championship tournament. Over the next three weeks, 16 national teams will be vying in Poland and Ukraine to raise the championship trophy. Talented though their national team may be, it’s unlike that Croatia will be celebrating a European championship. Their fans, however, have started Euro 2012 with a bang…and they’ll likely be in rare form as long as Croatia is still in contention. Two government workers are in trouble at home for their behavior prior to Croatia’s opening victory over Ireland in Poznan, Poland. Evidently, some folks back home in Zagreb have a problem with female government employees getting sloppy drunk and flashing their…um, assets for the world to see. Go figure.
Then again, not everyone in Croatia have their panties in a wad over their women letting their hair (and other things) down. In fact, one Croatian newspaper went so far as to print an editorial asking (in Croatian, of course), “What’s wrong with breasts?” (link is most definitely NSFW)
What’s wrong? Not a thing, and as long as Croatian fans are having a good time, perhaps the folks at home might want to lighten up. This is what European soccer fans do when they travel to support their team. Hey, it could be worse; they could be English…and they’d be getting blind drunk and starting brawls with supporters of opposing teams. Somehow, women flashing their breasts seems pretty tame when viewed in that light.
Hey, it’s a soccer tournament. No one said it was supposed to make sense.
