Mitt Romney 2012: Because he can lie faster than you can fact-check

On last night’s show, Rachel talked at some length about a subject I follow with great interest: Mitt Romney’s habit of saying things that aren’t true. Summarizing some of yesterday’s big political headlines, Rachel explained, “Just like Mitt Romney lied in his very first ad, in a really blunt, schoolyard kind of way. They’re now lying in the new ad that is about Solyndra and Mitt Romney is lying about it personally out of his face at his big campaign stunt today.

It’s only the beginning of June, but The Maddow Blog’s recurring feature, Chronicling Mitt’s Mendacity, is already up to Volume 20. Romney, who lies like most people breathe, is such an adept, bloodless prevaricator that he even manages to lie about being a person of integrity. What I find so distressing is that if Barack Obama was doing the same thing, the media (Right-wing and otherwise) would be roasting him (and deservedly so). Mitt Romney treats the truth like it’s a contagion, and what you hear from the media is…crickets.

I suppose this is about all one can reasonably expect when a candidate can’t compete on the issues…and knows it. Romney has nothing substantive to offer, and so his campaign will consist of large servings of panem et circenses, as well as smoke and mirrors. Ever the “man of integrity,” Romney and his shock troops will be doing whatever they believe it takes to win, no matter how dishonest, underhanded, or mean-spirited. If it takes relying on the Big Lie and burying Barack Obama in specious allegations and blatantly untrue assaults on his character, then that’s what Romney and his campaign will do. And the media will will give him a pass.

It’s reprehensible and disgusting…but this is what we have to look forward to over the next five months. Romney will continue to lie with ever-increasing speed and dexterity, with the likely result that the American Sheeple will lose the ability to distinguish his lies from the truth. It’s like my father used to tell me, “If you can’t dazzle ‘em with the facts, bury ‘em in bullshit.”

It’s getting deep in here….

The theory seems to be that if they can spew enough lies, if they can prevaricate and dissemble faster than anyone can fact-check, then the media will give up on making even the minimal effort they’re currently putting into calling out Romney’s epic mendacity.

Voters and candidates are certainly free to their opinions. What they’re most certainly NOT free to are they own facts. Then again, Romney’s surrogates and minions know that the American Sheeple will hear the sound bites, but very likely not the fact-checking that might (or more likely might not) follow closely behind.

The truly sad aspect of Mitt Romney’s commitment to dishonesty is that this is the best the GOP has to put forward this fall. Republicans at some level realize that they can’t defeat the President on the issues…and so they’ve decided to do whatever it takes- no matter how dishonest, inaccurate, and thoroughly mendacious it might be. Evidently, when you’re a Republican, winning isn’t everything; it’s the ONLY thing.

Integrity is for losers and Liberals….

Man, the next five months are going to suck….
