Orvillecopter: Some things, once seen, cannot be unseen

Cats may get nine lives, but not quite like this. A Dutch artist, upset over losing his beloved pet, Orville, had the animal stuffed and transformed its body into a remote-controlled helicopter, Sky News reported Monday. The “half cat, half machine” piece of art was dubbed the “Orvillecopter.” The cat, who was killed when it was hit by a car, was named after famed American aviator Orville Wright…. “After a period of mourning, he received his propellers posthumously,” Jansen said.

I suspect that most, if not all, of us have lost pets at some points in our lives. I’ve lost what feels like more than my fair share, but such is the price we pay for allowing critters to wrap their paws around our heart, no?

When a pet dies, most of us would probably do something simple, like perhaps burying them in the backyard. Dutch artist Bart Jansen, upset over the loss of his cat, decided the best way to channel his grief would be to…have Orville stuffed, fit for rotors and and a small motor, and turned into a helicopter. At first I thought this was an Internet meme designed to go viral and suck in as many gullible people as possible, but you can watch the YouTube video or this video and decided for yourself.

I don’t know about you, but I found myself so thoroughly creeped out that I found it rather humorous…in very sick, horrible, and twisted way.

I suppose we all grieve differently, eh? I never thought I’d see the day when “taxidermy” and “testing for airworthiness” would be added to the stages of grief….
