There is no end which the human will despairs of attaining through the combined power of individuals united into a society.
- Alexis de Tocqueville
I’ve refrained from saying anything about the massacre in Aurora, CO. Lord knows there was enough instant analysis and idiotic self-righteous opinionizing as it was; what could I possibly have added to la deluge? Even more than that, I’m not going to use abject tragedy to strengthen my brand.
Given the depth and breadth of the tragedy, you’d think that people in the media or government would take pains to be very judicious with their judgments and words. You might think that, but you’d be badly mistaken. NEVER misunderestimate the ability and willingness of the self-absorbed and thoughtless to interject themselves into a situation where they clearly don’t belong. It didn’t take long for the self-righteous silliness to begin. To wit:
Rep Louie Gohmert (R-TX) stated with the conviction only the truly insane and insensitive can muster that the Aurora massacre happened as a direct result of “ongoing attacks on Judeo-Christian beliefs”. That’s right; the single dumbest and most insensitive member of Congress (no mean feat given the competition) blames the massacre on “not enough God.” That ought to console those grieving the senseless loss of their loved ones.
Flip Benham of Operation Save America has a theory almost as unhinged as Gohmert’s. Benham believes that the suspect is “an Occupy Wall Street guy” who is “the spawn of the ideology of the Democratic Party:”. Right; responsibility for this tragedy goes all the way to the Oval Office, no?
Gary Bauer is accusing the Liberal Media of using the shooting to impugn the reputation of the Tea Party. Someone ought to clue Bauer in; the Tea Party needs no help. They’re quite capable of impugning their reputation absent outside help.
Anti-government talk show host Alex Jones believes the massacre was a staged terrorist attack, part of a premeditated plot by the government to turn America into a police state. Words fail me….
Joel Pollak from Breitbart.com believes the shooter could be a registered Democrat. Sure, because as any real American patriot knows, no Republican is capable of such inhumanity.
Fred Jackson, the American Family Association’s news director, believes the massacre is the product of a waning fear of God and Hell, which stems directly from the deleterious influence of Liberal churches and the media. Our willingness to think for ourselves instead of blindly obeying someone else’s interpretation of a Higher Power is the root cause of this massacre? Right….
Jerry Newcombe of Truth in Action Ministries has also weighed in, opining as Jackson did that this tragedy is the direct result of America’s diminishing fear of God and Hell. Evidently the stupid and self-righteous travel in pairs for safety.
Bryan Fischer, the American Family Association’s Director of Torquemada Studies, is on record as saying that the removal of prayer and the Ten Commandments from public schools is what led to the shooting in Aurora. In fact, it’s responsible for everything bad that happened to America. Yeah, that would certainly explains Joe Paterno and Jerry Sandusky, eh?
Jim Hoft took an original and highly creative approach, managing to find a way to tie the Aurora massacre into his epic, outsized hatred of Barack Obama. There’s just something about a Black man occupying the White House that drives some people bonkers. It has nothing to do with what happened in Aurora, of course…not that it will stop barely lucid trolls like Hoft from spewing their bile.
It’s still too early for anyone to claim that they truly understand why this tragedy occurred. What saddens and sickens me is that so many are willing to use this act of domestic terrorism as a means of promoting their own twisted agenda. People were murdered senselessly; their families and loved ones are suffering unimaginably…and these trolls (and many others) are plowing the depths of that suffering to promote their own addled, hyper-religious world view.
I can only hope that there’s a special place in Hell for all those who think it appropriate and reasonable to use this tragedy for their self-aggrandizement.
