Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.
- George Carlin
Every now and again, I begin to gradually detach from reality, and I start thinking that maybe America isn’t a collective intellectual black hole after all. Then something happens to yank me out of my reverie, and I’m reminded all over again how phenomenally, unbelievably brain-dead Americans can be.
It seems Idiocracy was more than just a movie; it was a rumination on the state of America today…and it ain’t pretty….
I’ll grant you that the vast majority of the Penn State community are good and decent people. They’re ashamed for what’s transpired in the name of football at the institution they love. They understand and accept that something went horribly, irredeemably wrong, and that the consequences flowing from that necessarily must be severe. It’s not fun, but they recognize that the well-being of children is of far greater importance than football.
And then there are those who believe that NOTHING is more important than football. The reactions on Twitter to the NCAA sanctions against Penn State were…um, disturbing…to say the least. And it doesn’t help that the family of the late Joe Paterno is still attempting to spin events in a cynical attempt to avoid shining the light of responsibility on their beloved JoePa. Right; Paterno looked the other way for a decade while Jerry Sandusky molested young boys, and his family still believes he should be revered as an icon? WTF? I guess denial really IS more than a river in Egypt, no?
I’d challenge you to read through some of the tweets produced by people willing to display their racism, homophobia, ignorance, and lack of perspective for the world to see. I think you’ll find yourself astonished at the number of truly hateful, braindead bipeds dragging their knuckle across the Earth we share.
Wow…just wow….
