Sloppy is as sloppy does: The legacy of Andrew Breitbart

Think of how stupid the average person is, and realize half of them are stupider than that.

  • George Carlin

Yeah, I get it that Conservative political bloggers think and believe differently than I do. That’s hardly breaking news, but that’s hardly what this is about. No, this is about an overcooked Andrew Breitbart-wannabe thinking that he (or she) is playing “Gotcha!” with a journalist formerly affiliated with the Cleveland Plain Dealer. Anyone with half a brain, or access to The Google, knows that Schultz is the wife of Sen. Sherrod Brown (D-OH).

Oh, so not only has Schultz been seen HUGGING Sen. Brown, now she’s openly admitting to SLEEPING WITH HIM?? My god, where does the corruption and licentiousness end??

Memo to the addled Breitbart acolyte: Just for future reference, here’s a few things to keep in mind the next time you think you might just have a breaking story (which OH SO MANY bloggers actually get, right?):

1) Make sure you spell your target’s name right.

2) Do not announce to your target that you are “doing an exposé” on them. Instead, use more subtle terminology, such as “We are investigating your corrupt practices for a hit piece that will destroy you and your ilk for all time. Thank you so much for your cooperation, and have a great day!”

3) Make use of reliable inside-journalism sources like Wikipedia or an Ouija board to do basic fact checking.

And the next time you think you might have stumbled onto a breaking story involving sex, corruption, and/or inappropriate behavior…try to drop the smug “GOTCHA!!” attitude when approaching one of the subjects of your story. Just sayin’….

Oh, and if you make a mistake, (and your silence in response to Schultz’ setting you straight can only mean you know you screwed the pooch on this one), be a mensch and own up to it. An apology would go a long way toward redeeming yourself. We all screw up; is it too much to expect that you admit to it?

Then again, as a disciple of the late Andrew Breitbart, who was no fan of moi, I imagine that your belief in doing the right and decent thing is minimal at best. Breitbart never admitted to making a mistake or getting his facts wrong, though he was wrong far more often than he was right. It would seem that his path has become a well-traveled one.

Rock on….
