It's Texas, so the line between patriotism and treason is...well, pretty much invisible

[Obama] is going to try to hand over the sovereignty of the United States to the UN. Okay, what’s going to happen when that happens? I’m thinking worst case scenario here. Civil unrest, civil disobedience, civil war maybe. We’re not just talking a few riots here and demonstrations. We’re talking Lexington-Concord take up arms and get rid of the guy. Now what’s going to happen if we do that, if the public decides to do that? He’s going to send in U.N. troops — with the little blue beanies. I don’t want ‘em in Lubbock County. Okay. So I’m going to stand in front of their armored personnel carrier and say ‘you’re not coming in here’. “And the sheriff, I’ve already asked him, I said ‘you gonna back me’ he said, ‘yeah, I’ll back you.’”

One of the things I’ve always loved about Texas is the outsized arrogance so many Texans possess when it comes to their love for the Lone Star State. The plethora of Texans who believe they live in God’s Country is truly amazing for a state that’s largely uninhabitable desert wasteland. The mythology that’s taught to Texas children ends up magnified in political life, where far too many assign Texas an importance far beyond anything resembling reality…which is where Judge Tom Head, a county judge in Lubbock comes into our story.

Head, who seems to have overdosed on Tea Party paranoia and is deeply in the throes of Obama Derangement syndrome, is not about to allow his hometown of Lubbock to go down without a fight. Head went on local television and announced that he would personally join the resistance against the UN usurping American sovereignty. Never mind that there’s absolutely no indication that the UN has designs on American sovereignty, much less at the behest of President Obama. Of course facts and reality appear to have no place in the Tea Party these days, so….

TO THE BARRICADES!! LUBBOCK (AND OUR FREEDOM!!) IS IN GRAVE DANGER!!

Or something like that.

Lost in the madness is one very simple question: Why would the UN invade Lubbock? I mean, have you ever been to Lubbock? How anyone, much less the UN, could find any reason to invade a wide spot in the road in the middle of nowhere defies rational understanding.

Another aspect, and one that Judge Head, being a judge, should recognize and understand is that he may well have committed treason. It seems that advocating for a violent insurrection aimed at overthrowing the US government is…well, illegal:

Sec. 2385. Advocating overthrow of Government

Whoever knowingly or willfully advocates, abets, advises, or teaches the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying the government of the United States or the government of any State, Territory, District or Possession thereof, or the government of any political subdivision therein, by force or violence, or by the assassination of any officer of any such government; or

Whoever, with intent to cause the overthrow or destruction of any such government, prints, publishes, edits, issues, circulates, sells, distributes, or publicly displays any written or printed matter advocating, advising, or teaching the duty, necessity, desirability, or propriety of overthrowing or destroying any government in the United States by force or violence, or attempts to do so; or

Whoever organizes or helps or attempts to organize any society, group, or assembly of persons who teach, advocate, or encourage the overthrow or destruction of any such government by force or violence; or becomes or is a member of, or affiliates with, any such society, group, or assembly of persons, knowing the purposes thereof—
Shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.

If two or more persons conspire to commit any offense named in this section, each shall be fined under this title or imprisoned not more than twenty years, or both, and shall be ineligible for employment by the United States or any department or agency thereof, for the five years next following his conviction.

As used in this section, the terms “organizes” and “organize”, with respect to any society, group, or assembly of persons, include the recruiting of new members, the forming of new units, and the regrouping or expansion of existing clubs, classes, and other units of such society, group, or assembly of persons.

Yep, Head’s declaration could cost him 20 years in prison. Of course, being a Republican means never having to say you’re sorry…or being called to account for your advocating for violent revolution and a threat against a duly-elected President. In Texas, Head would face treason charges only if he was a Democrat. Of course, treason is a federal crime….

Maybe it’s something in the water in Texas. After all, Ted Cruz, the Republican candidate for the US Senate, is absolutely convinced that billionaire and Liberal bogeyman George Soros is spearheading a UN conspiracy to eliminate golf. Say hello to the next Senator from Texas…a man whose looney-tune views make Rick Perry look like the harbinger of reason and moderation.

Perhaps Head might be well advised to be concerned; it’s not like the Feds aren’t arresting people for treason….
