The American Sheeple: Willing accomplices in their own enforced demise

Education is dangerous - Every educated person is a future enemy.

  • Hermann Goering

There’s a disturbing, though certainly not new, force at work in this country. WIth each passing election, Americans seem less willing and inclined to make considered decisions regarding whom they vote for. It appears our national attention span is decreasing just as the amount of money spent by billionaires to buy elections increases exponentially. The inevitable result is that millions of Americans are propagandized into voting against their own interests, which they do with increasing (and disturbing) frequency. With each passing election cycle, the problem becomes worse. As increasing numbers of Americans becoming disillusioned with politics, money and propaganda become more prominent and influential. Because of this, we end up with ever greater numbers of politicians who have no business being in office. Some have the intellectual and/or moral candlepower of a soap dish. Some care all and only for their own ambition. Some are just looking for a good-paying job and the attention and adulation that go along with it. Whatever the reasons, Americans are increasingly willing to settle for elected representatives who shouldn’t be trusted to manage a Dairy Queen, much less make policy on a national (or really, ANY) level.

Yes, I plan on voting for Barack Obama in November, so my partisanship is out there and self-evident. My partisanship aside, though, how could any lucid, thinking person rationalize and justify voting for a Presidential ticket predicated on lies, dishonesty, dissembling, and misdirection? How could anyone vote for politicians who camouflage their true intentions with platitudes and propaganda? How is it possible to even consider casting a vote for those whose idea of intelligent debate is to make up specious allegations against their opponent out of whole cloth?

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan aren’t stupid; neither is their campaign staff. Far from it. So one who have to assume that they’re knowingly and willfully peddling lies…and yet they continue to traffic in dishonesty and propaganda. Why? BECAUSE IT WORKS. Because regardless of what the truth may be, Americans have a disturbing tendency to believe the worst of a politician. If Mitt Romney gave a speech stating that Barack Obama kept a stable of underage boys in the White House for his own personal sexual gratification, that story would be broadcast over virtually every news outlet from any medium with moments. It would receive especially heavy play on Fox News Channel, which in the estimation of millions of Americans would give it a patina of authenticity. Before you know it, the President would be questioned on the subject at every opportunity…and Romney would win the day by virtue of diverting attention from his duplicity and mendacity.

Normally, I’m loathe to employ Nazi analogies because of the emotional baggage that comes with them. In this case, though, there’s no denying that the Romney/Ryan campaign have taken a page from Josef Goebbels by employing his “Big Lie” technique. The premise of the “Big Lie” is that if you repeat a lie often enough and with sufficient conviction, the Sheeple will eventually accept it as the truth. It’s reprehensible, and it’s the sign of a campaign and candidates devoid of ideas or convictions…but it works, and the American Sheeple just might elect a pair of inveterate liars in November.

Who says we don’t get exactly the quality of leadership we deserve?

How can a democracy continue to function in an environment in which lies and propaganda are granted more gravitas than the truth? I have friends who won’t believe something until and unless they hear it on Fox News Channel, at which point it becomes cemented as Gospel in their mind. These are people for whom Conservapedia is a legitimate source of information they hold in high regard. It appears Orwell was right.

Black is White. Day is Night. Right is Wrong. Good is Evil. And so it goes….

We are at war with Oceania. We have ALWAYS been at war with Oceania.

Mitt Romney and Paul Ryan have a legitimate shot at victory in November because millions of the American Sheeple believe what they’re told. They accept whatever propaganda they’re fed by Right-wing media outlets. They hate everything “Liberal,” but they can’t craft a cogent argument as to why. They think Barack Obama is a Kenyan-born, Socialist Islamofascist who secretly hates America and wants to hand American sovereignty over to the UN in an effort to create a One World government.
