Ah, those self-deprecating Canadians. If you love watching a Zamboni resurface the ice—and who doesn’t?—here’s your chance to watch some folks apply paint to the subsurface, live. Apparently this means hockey season might be starting sometime?
I’ve been something of a Maple Leafs fan for years, though I’m not really certain I could explain why. I’ve never been to Toronto, and the Maple Leafs haven’t been a Stanley Cup contender since, what, the LBJ Administration?
It seems things in Toronto are in no danger of improving any time soon. How bad are things in Air Canada Centre? How about bad enough that the Maple Leafs are offering fans a free chance to watch paint dry. Literally. Unfortunately for Leafs fans, who are the very definition of “longsuffering,” this represents the best product the team has put on the ice in years. Time was when the Maple Leafs were one of the NHL’s showcase franchises, a team with a long history of success. Now they’re hockey’s equivalent of the Chicago Cubs…except that the Cubs are at least lovable. The Maple Leafs have sucked for so long that I can’t even remember the last time they were a threat to anyone but themselves…nor can most Canadians.
Kinda makes you long for curling season, eh?
