Yes, I realize that’s it September 11th…as if the media and politicians would ever let us forget. By no means do I mean to make light of the significance of this anniversary, but neither do I intend to supply the obligatory solemn reflections on What It All Means. It’s been 11 years, and though I lost a friend in one of the World Trade Center towers, I’ve said everything I have to say. I don’t intend to forget what today represents, but I want to look into the future instead of living in the past.
I want to figure out how we can all live together, instead of allowing those who hate to define us by our differences.
I want to live in a world not governed by fear of a terrorist attack that will likely never occur.
I want to live in a country which hasn’t handed the terrorists a victory by meekly acquiescing to trading rights for security.
I want to live in a place willing to define itself by its future and its potential instead of by its past anger and heartache.
That’s what I’m thinking about on this 9/11. If you came here looking for a long, solemn reflective piece on the significance of 9/11, you’re going to want to go elsewhere. I just don’t have it in me anymore. I don’t need reminders of 9/11; like most Americans, I remember it quite well.
