Today's Republican Dick Move

This afternoon, in just over one hour, 23,000 people signed a petition asking CNN to fire contributor Erick Erickson. His offense? He referred to the Democrats’ packed list of female speakers at their convention in Charlotte, North Carolina as “the Vagina Monologues”…. After a flurry of furious tweets, Erickson — who once said he “kind of like[d] the idea” that women are barred from a golf club so that he wasn’t “hanging out at some women’s event” — half-heartedly expressed regret for his comment, saying “My apologies to those offended by my tweet. Wasn’t my intention.”

I believe in free speech and expression; after all, that’s what’s allowed me to keep this blog going for 11 years (that and I evidently have WAY too much time on my hands). I will defend to the death Erick Erickson’s right to express himself…and not just because he spends so much time trying to swallow his ColeHaans. I’ve said many a time that free speech can be- and often is- offensive, ignorant, and sexist speech…but that’s Erickson’s shtick. How a Conservative blogger whose only coherent argument is smug arrogance got a gig on CNN defies rational understanding. (No, I’m NOT jealous….)

I know; WHAT Liberal Media??

The news that Erickson made degrading, sexist comments on his Twitter feed isn’t exactly…well, news. It’s his raison d’etre. By insulting, among others, First Lady Michelle Obama, HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, and Iraq war veteran and double amputee Tammy Duckworth, Erickson was merely doing what comes naturally to him- being a dick. When you consider politics to be a man’s world and hold men to be superior to women, what you get is Erick Erickson…who shouldn’t be considered superior to anyone for ANY reason. A blogger of middling talent and average writing skills, Erickson’s modus operandi is to employ ridicule and smug arrogance when he recognizes he can’t win on the facts. In other words, ridicule and smug arrogance are his stock in trade. When you have nothing to say and you can’t write…well, what else are you going to do?

By employing his “Vagina Monologues” insult, he may well have stepped in it deep enough that his gig at CNN might be in some peril. I don’t know how or even if CNN responds to outrage directed at one of their pundits and/or demands that said pundit be fired, but they do seem to have a bit of a firestorm on their hands, eh?

Erickson is certainly free to be a dick…but do Americans have to patronize a cable news network which employs an ignorant misogynist? Oh, wait…Americans already do patronize a network that promotes ignorance, propaganda, and misogyny: it’s called Fox News Network. Even if CNN does fire Erickson, we can expect to see him pop up almost immediately on FNC. (Fox News Channel: Fair and balanced…if you’re a Conservative White male who hates women.)

Man, karma can be a real…well, we all know what karma is like, right?? I hope Erickson roasts in it; he’s had it coming for awhile.
