If you think Republicans will stop trying to game the system now that the election is over....

Husted’s solution to this perceived problem of Democrats and the national media picking on him? He says we should make Ohio less important in the election by dividing up our electoral votes by Congressional district. This is huge and should raise giant red flags. Under the current winner-take-all system, Obama won all 18 of Ohio’s electoral votes. Under Husted’s plan, 12 of those 18 electoral votes would be handed to Mitt Romney, the popular vote loser.

Republican efforts to suppress the votes of traditionally Democratic constituencies have been as well-documented as they were prevalent. Nationwide, states with Republican-controlled legislatures have come up with all manner of schemes to tilt the playing field to their advantage. Anyone who knows politics understands that the lower the voter turnout, the better the prospects of Republican candidates. Thus, the commitment to things like Voter ID. While couched in the language of “preserving electoral integrity,” the truth is that true voter fraud is so rare as to be virtually nonexistent. Voter ID, shorter early voting hours, and similar schemes are little more than poorly-camouflaged attempts to rig elections so that Republican chances at victory increase at the expense of Democrats.

If you think this problem will disappear with the passing of the election, you’re delusional. Republicans will continue efforts to game the system so that in 2014 and 2016, Republicans and Democrats will no longer be playing on a level playing field. They’ll have the benefit of far less media attention, which means they stand a better chance of success. States like Ohio have a Republican Secretary of State pushing an elector-apportioning scheme that would have handed the state to Mitt Romney…despite the fact that he lost Ohio by five percentage points.

The 2014 and 2016 elections will probably look very different, because Republicans will keep at it until they create a system more to their liking.

If you have to lie, cheat, and steal in order to have any chance at victory, your ideas suck.

Nice to know that Republicans are all over the idea of promoting democracy, eh??
