If God meant for you to have money, you wouldn't have been born poor

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

VA Attorney General Ken Cuccinelli

I’m probably not the guy most Catholic bishops care to see anymore because I zero-in on them every time I spot them in the room and they get sort of the three-minute version of the church piece of this. They’ve helped create a culture of dependency on government, not God. And rarely do you see the two - once churches get out of the business of serving the poor, or not get out of the business but hand over and argue that they shouldn’t be the primary institution in a society that is responsible for service to the poor.

It would be far too easy to ridicule Ken Cuccinelli for being just another heartless, callous Republican attempting to demagogue a legitimate social issue in order to advance his political prospects. It would be far too easy because that’s exactly what he’s doing. If Cuccinelli is running on his Christian faith, then I’m Paula Abdul.

“The Cooch,” as he’s (no doubt to his consternation) known in Virginia is running for Governor, and he’s determined to appeal to “Kill ‘em all, let God sort ‘em out” wing of Virginia’s Republican Party. I’m not going to factor his clear and obvious inhuman Conservatism into my critique; that’s not at the top of my list this time.

What IS at the top of my list is Cuccinelli’s heartless, compassion-free Christianity. I find myself wondering how he mananged to conflate Ayn Rand with Jesus Christ. Somehow confusing the Catholic Church’s appeal for government to assist the “least among us” with his hatred of “a culture of dependence on government,” The Cooch argues that churches, not government, should be primarily responsible for providing aid and assistance to those in need. Conveniently left out Cucinelli’s argument is that reality that government has far more resources at its disposal than any religious organization. Besides, it’s not as if his own Catholic Church has a stellar and unblemished record of compassion and caring for those in need.

Cuccinelli is all about churches being involved in assisting the sick and the poor. This, no doubt, would free up more money for tax cuts to the 1% and to wage war with or to fund tax cuts for billionaires- you know, the ones who will underwrite his campaign. His Christianity, such as it is, goes on as far as it has to in order to embellish his political prospects. The truth is that poor people don’t donate to Republican campaigns, nor are they prone to vote Republican…so why should Cuccinelli give a damn about them? The poor are of no use to him. Compassion is for losers and Liberals…because they certainly don’t win elections.

Cuccinelli’s virulent homophobia and holier-than-thou hyper-religiosity leaves me wondering what he has buried in his closet. It’s possible he comes by his hatred and willingness to repress others honestly, but quite often there’s a boyfriend, a mistress, or another dirty little secret cleverly hidden in the back of the metaphorical closet.

I do believe I have the perfect slogan for the Cooch’s campaign, though:

KEN CUCCINELLI FOR VIRGINIA: KILL ‘EM ALL, LET GOD SORT ‘EM OUT!
