If James Dobson and Bryan Fischer make you feel like a Christian, you're doing it wrong

I mean millions of people have decided that God doesn’t exist… And a lot of these things are happening around us, and somebody is going to get mad at me for saying what I am about to say right now, but I am going to give you my honest opinion: I think we have turned our back on the scripture and on God almighty and I think he has allowed [this Newtown massacre] judgment to fall upon us. I think that’s what’s going on.

  • Dr. James Dobson

In the wake of the senseless massacre in Newtown, CT, it’s understandable that some might wonder how a loving and compassionate God could allow the brutal, random murder of children. Making sense of such tragic carnage is difficult enough in the visible and tangible world. That such an event could shake one’s faith to its very core isn’t difficult to comprehend.

Despite the legitimate crisis of faith events like Newtown plunge many Christians into, there are those calling themselves “Christians” who view such tragedies as an opportunity to profit and increase their media exposure. Zealots like James Dobson, Bryan Fischer, and so many others have used Newtown as an opportunity to flog their hateful, intolerant “Christianity”, even as parents and loved ones grieve the loss of their children.

I don’t know about you, but I remember enough from my Sunday School days to know that Jesus Christ didn’t teach that pouring salt in the wounds of the grieving is appropriate and reasonable. He didn’t preach that the senseless massacre of innocents in an elementary school is the PERFECT time to point out to America that their tolerance of homosexuality and Liberal politics is what brought tragedy to bear once again.

Dobson and Fischer, the faces of the American Family Association, clearly understand nothing about family nor the Savior they profess to revere. That they see nothing wrong or inappropriate in trampling on the suffering and grief of so many only demonstrates how far the’ll go to advance their twisted agenda. If Dobson, Fischer, and their ilk are Christians…well, it shouldn’t take much to understand why I don’t believe in God, particularly one so craven, heartless, and devoid of compassion.

I realize that Dobson and Fischer aren’t breaking any laws, and that they’re entitled to exercise their 1st Amendment rights. It’s just too bad that they feel justified in being so thoroughly devoid of compassion and humanity. Not only are they and their fellow travelers frauds, but so is their flavor of God. Then again, for these hateful zealots it’s really not about God, or Christian charity and compassion. It’s just another chance to appeal to those who, like themselves, believe God to be an angry, vindictive, and mean-spirited S.O.B. When you care for nothing except for the profit and exposure that can be wrung from unimaginable tragedy, you know nothing of the teachings of Jesus Christ.

When the senseless slaughter of innocents is viewed first and foremost as a fundraising bonanza, you’re very, very sick…and I have to believe that the Jesus Christ I was taught about in Sunday School would want nothing to do with you.
