Today on "Great Moments in Republican Hypocrisy"

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Rep. James Lankford (R-OK)

CONSTITUENT: My question is regarding the guns and is Washington at all aware of the psychotropic drugs that these children are taking? I guarantee it 100 percent that’s our big problem. […]

LANKFORD: I agree with that. I think there’s a bunch of issues that, quite frankly, most liberals are afraid to talk about. […] Where are we on all those psychiatric drugs? We’ve overmedicated kids. Quite frankly some of the overmedication of kids are because welfare moms want to get additional benefits and if they can put them on SSI through maintenance drugs, they can also put them on Social Security disability and get a separate check. That is wrong on every single level. Not only is it fraudulent to the government, but it also tells a kid with great potential, “don’t try because you’re disabled.”

When the 5th-ranking Republican in the House of Representatives is engaged in such egregious intellectual midgetry and dishonesty, one begins to understand why Congress’ approval ratings are on par with anal wars and Hugo Chavez. That by no means excuses Lankford’s hypocrisy and dissembling, but it lends some context. When a Congressman can with a straight face place the blame for increased gun violence on “welfare moms,” we’ve gone to a very dark and stupid place.

It’s difficult to know whether Lankford honestly believes the words coming out of his mouth or if he’s just coddling a constituent who’s too stupid for words, but whose vote he needs. That there’s absolutely no research to back Langford’s ridiculous assertions shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone with a functional sense of decency…and lacking said sense of decency is quite probably what allows Lankford to say something so thoroughly offensive and completely wrong. Then again, the Tea Party isn’t renowned for supporting politicians possessed of anything resembling honesty, integrity, intelligence, or decency…which would certainly explain Lankford.

If you find yourself wondering what the Tea Party stands for, Lankford is a “shining” example of the ignorance and empty promise it has to stand for. That so many like-minded Teapublicans have been elected is not a positive sign for this country.

WE DESERVE BETTER.
