ORLANDO — Orlando Regional Medical Center officials says a 16-year-old may be paralyzed after he was shot while playing basketball.
Mario Whitehead was shot in the right shoulder area Monday night at Willie Mays Park in Orlando.
Police said there was a large crowd on the court playing basketball when two people bumped into each other during the game.
Investigators said one of the men had a gun in his waistband and pulled it out to check it when the gun accidentally fired, hitting Whitehead.
Police said it doesn’t appear the teens had been arguing.
News 13 spoke with the victim’s brother.
“I’m devastated dude. We come up here all the time. It could have been anybody. It could have been my youngest brother, it could have been me, it could have been anybody. It’s scary,” said Marvin Giles.
Doctors said Whitehead was possibly paralyzed from the stomach area down.
