Tea Party Congressman Louie Gohmert (R-TX) told a conservative radio show on Thursday that the GOP must oppose gun regulations to protect the country from the threat of “Sharia Law.”…. Appearing on The Voice of Freedom, Gohmert said he “hoped and prayed” that Congress rejects gun safety legislation, arguing that Americans may need to use the rights guaranteed by the Second Amendment to avoid succumbing to Muslims:
[The Second Amendment] is for our protection and the founders’ quotes make that very very clear and including against a government that would run amuck. We’ve got some people who think Sharia Law should be the law of the land, forget the Constitution. But the guns are there… to make sure all of the rest of the Amendments are followed.
I feel oddly comforted (well, OK, not really) in the knowledge that the dumbest member of the House of Representatives takes protecting the Homeland from the creeping, insidious “threat” of Sharia so seriously. Yeah, I WOULD feel better…if not for the knowledge that it’s highly unlikely that an intellectual and moral lightweight like Gohmert could even tell us what Sharia is.
Gohmert is famed for his impressively self-righteous displays of Islamophobia and a demagogic willingness to fan the flames of hatred in an effort to advance his brand. That he represents east Texas seems oddly fitting, but that’s another story for another day. Gohmert’s managed to transcend his roots and take his abject hatred, anti-intellectualism, and willingness to engage in slander and all manner of character assassination national. Truth be told, Gohmert’s abject “fear” of Sharia extends only insofar as he can use it to increase his face time on Fox News Channel and shore up his personal political prospects. If he understood ANYTHING about Sharia, he’d know that it’s no threat to America, nor is it “creeping,” destined to one day completely replace our own legal systems. Christians are more likely to force adulteresses to wear scarlet letters than Sharia is to becoming the law of the land. Not this inconvenient truth will stop the fear-mongering….
His slavish devotion to the 2nd Amendment is merely a way to keep his firepower loving gun nut constituency pacified and in line. Better to keep ‘em scared and stupid than to try to reason with them…’cuz they might not like what you have to say.
Yes, it’s so much easier when you break things down scientifcally…and did I mention what a fan of science Gohmert is? No? Man, how could I have left that part out?
Oh, and if you’re in the mood for a two-fer- and why wouldn’t you be?- Gohmert also has been holding forth on how the federal debt is every bit as immoral as slavery. Don’t worry, though- no brain cells were harmed in the formation of that bit of philosophical chicanery.
