THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD
(apologies to Keith Olbermann)
Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX)
In an unusual move, Sen. Ted Cruz (R-Texas) objected last week to a routine Senate resolution commemorating Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week…. [L]ast week, Cruz objected to including the MS Awareness resolution. He was unhappy with a clause in the resolution describing the purpose of the Multiple Sclerosis Coalition, according to a Democratic staffer. Cruz’s staff said the problem was timing…. “The Senator, like many of his colleagues, will not grant consent to call up and pass a resolution or bill at the last minute without time for review,” spokesman Sean Rushton said in a statement. “The Texans who sent him to Washington expect nothing less.”
There’s been a lot of talk about Ted Cruz being the Second Coming of Joseph McCarthy. Based on the first couple months of Cruz’ tenure as the junior senator from Texas, he may well be on his way to surpassing McCarthy’s venality and mean-spiritedness.
Cruz and his staff can attempt to frame his opposition to a seemingly simple Senate resolution commemorating Multiple Sclerosis Awareness Week as he chooses, but the symbolism of his move is clearly lost on him. He may think…well, I’m not at all certain there was even any actual thought process taking place, because he came out looking like just another clueless, mean-spirited Republican ideologue. By objecting to a by all indications innocent resolution on a disease that impacts millions of Americans, Cruz has revealed himself to be a man in name only, devoid of compassion, reason, decency, and a sense of humanity.
So what’s next, Senator? Taking the walker from an elderly lady? Stealing insulin from a diabetic? Swiping a guide dog from a blind person? After all, “The Texans who sent him to Washington expect nothing less.” And it would seem they have EXACTLY the quality of leadership they deserve.
