Another reason every day is Gun Appreciation Day

A retired Deschutes County sheriff’s captain injured himself when a pistol he was cleaning fired a bullet into his hand this morning, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

Randy Wight, 66, was treated and released from St. Charles Bend Medical Center, a hospital spokeswoman said.

Wight completed his annual qualification during a session at the Sheriff’s Office firearms range in Millican and began disassembling his 9 mm pistol for cleaning, according to a news release. A round left in the chamber discharged, striking Wight in the hand at 10:36 a.m.

Sheriff’s training staff and other retired officers rendered first aid; Wight was flown via Air Link to St. Charles, according to the Sheriff’s Office. His wound was non-life threatening.

Sheriff’s detectives are investigating the incident, according to the Sheriff’s Office.
