The alleged road rage shooting that occurred Friday night on U.S. 1 South was started with aggressive driving by both drivers, according to witness statements in the official accident report by the St. Johns County Sheriff’s Office.
Defendant David Juratovac reportedly “brake checked” the vehicle of shooting victim Jared Parkey for following too closely, and hot tempers apparently led to violence from there.
Parkey was shot twice by Juratovac and flown to Shands Jacksonville, where he was treated and released.
Reports from witnesses said that both vehicles had been driving recklessly prior to the shooting.
The report says Parkey admitted to throwing a water jug at Juratovac’s vehicle, which further escalated the incident. Parkey also told deputies that he had been driving aggressively. An eyewitness said the vehicles then collided and pulled to the side of the road.
A witness told investigators that after both vehicles were stopped, Juratovac exited his 2006 Ford Explorer and walked to the driver’s side of Parkey’s 2007 Toyota 4Runner. Without any verbal or physical altercation, the witness said Juratovac fired into Parkey’s vehicle, which struck the driver.
In 911 recordings released Monday, the wives of the victim and the shooter can be heard asking for help.
Robin Juratovac, who is with the Sheriff’s Office, is heard saying: “I’m trying to control my husband.” She also gives the dispatcher a status report on the victim.
In her call to 911, Ashley Parkey tries to explain where they are and then tells the dispatcher: “My husband just got shot, please hurry!”
When he was arrested at the scene, Juratovac told deputies that he was the shooter.
According to the report, Juratovac said: “The other vehicle involved threw an object at my vehicle then hit my vehicle, when we came to a stop, the driver ran up to my car and I shot him.”
