The ad’s core claim is that “Kelly Ayotte voted for a bipartisan plan to make background checks more effective.” In reality, Ayotte opposed the bipartisan background checks plan co-sponsored by Sen. Pat Toomey (R-PA). What she voted for instead was a plan by Sens. Chuck Grassley (R-IA) and Ted Cruz (R-TX) that would actually weaken gun laws by making it easier to buy and transport guns across state lines. Gun sales in states with lax gun laws are a common method of evading strict state and local laws, and are a major driver of gun violence in cities such as Chicago. So the proposal Ayotte supported could make gun violence worse.
Judging by the cynical, dishonest ways the NRA manipulates the truth, it’s not hard to understand the very real threat to their agenda. When you have to lie in order to protect a Senator, when you have to claim that a vote against background checks is actually a vote for background checks…well, so much for claiming the moral high ground, eh?
Sen. Kelly Ayotte (R-NH) voted AGAINST the bipartisan effort to pass universal background checks that 91% of Americans support. It stands to reason that Ayotte’s poll numbers took a significant hit. I suppose that will happen when you vote on behalf of the 9% (and against 89% of her New Hampshire constituents) who oppose background checks. In light of the Sturm und Drang surrounding Ayotte these days, the NRA decided that it was time to protect one of their most faithful foot soldiers, evidently by any means necessary. Unable to argue the facts at face value, the NRA’s skilled propagandists decided they could twist those facts into something that just might convince New Hampshire voters that black really is white.
Yep, unable to make an accurate, factual argument on Ayotte’s behalf, the NRA has resorted to trickery, manipulation, and dishonesty. Consider the source; it’s probably the best we could have expected. When the truth isn’t on your side, lies and propaganda are all you have left to work with…and no group is better at turning lies into truth than the NRA.
Remember, as long as it’s someone else burying their children or loved ones…well, where’s the problem, right??
