A 32-year-old man is in custody after police say he bit off the thumb of a convenience store clerk Saturday.
Brandon D. Campbell entered the 7-11 store in the 8600 block of E. U.S. Highway 290 and purchased several items, according to an affidavit. During the transaction, Campbell became agitated, knocked his change on the floor and shouted an obscenity at the clerk.
Campbell left the store and dropped his items in the driveway outside the store. When the clerk bent to pick up the items, Campbell punched him in the face and hit him with a squeegee, the affidavit said. Campbell then bit the clerk’s left thumb, the affidavit said, severing it at the knuckle. The clerk’s hand has been permanently disfigured and impaired, the affidavit said.
Campbell was arrested while leaving the scene and told officers he bit off the clerk’s thumb, the affidavit said. He was charged with second degree aggravated assault, an offence that carries a possible jail sentence of two to 20 years in prison.
He was in the Travis County Jail Saturday on $30,000 bail.
