Mikhailov is deputy of the Legislative Assembly of the Trans-Baikal Parliament and said he plans to put forward the violent proposal as a new regional law. Speaking to the Chita news agency on Thursday, Mr Mikhailov linked gay people to paedophiles and suggested they should be whipped in public squares by “marines”…. Referencing a doctor, who criticised the decision of several European countries to legalise marriage rights for same-sex couples, Mr Mikhailov praised the doctor and reportedly said: “We have to deal with such things”. He added that his province should adopt a law in which the marines have the right to flog the “asses” of gay people…. “In Russia for many centuries the ass was used for educational purposes and not for love entertainment. So we should use it according to its intended purpose,” the MP said.
Many observers think of Russia as a budding democracy, a laboratory for governments of the future. The truth is that the Russia is neither. It’s a democracy in name only, corrupt beyond measure and heavily invested in repressing basic freedoms. Mother Russia and its government has given itself over to fear, prejudice, and the willingness to oppress, harass, and in some case kill those who dare to think, love, and/or live differently. The only difference between Russian oligarchy and nomenklatura is that at least the Communists were honest about their intentions. Welcome to Amerika if the Tea Party came to power….
It may be that Alexander Mikhailov is unknowingly struggling with some issues that have left him at odds with his sexuality. Or perhaps he’s just a psychopath bent on spreading his ignorance and hatred to the four winds. That he sees nothing wrong with the idea of whipping homosexuals speaks to both a lack of intellectual agility and an absence of even the barest shred of humanity. He claims knowledge of natural law where no such thing exists, and he’s willing to use that belief to do harm to those whose primary desire is to be left alone to live and love as they choose.
Why Mikhailov is so fixated on what consenting adults do behind closed doors defies rational understanding. If you believe, as I do, that one most fights what one most fears, his virulent and violent homophobia comes into clearer focus. That said, no reasonable person would assume Mikhailov possesses the self-knowledge to recognize, much less admit, what may well lie at the center of his fear and hatred.
If Mikhailov could be bothered to listen to his own language, he might begin to see that his homophobia is merely masking his own fear. What’s he afraid of? I’ll leave that to the reader’s conjecture, but I think it’s pretty clear that Mikhailov is fighting what he most fears in himself.
