George Zimmerman in Texas. With a gun. What could POSSIBLY go wrong?

Q: George Zimmerman, you just got away with murder! What are you going to do next?

A: I’m going to Disneyland! Well, eventually. First I’m going to Texas, where I can live the good life with some of my fellow gun nuts 2nd Amendment devotees. It’ll be fun!

You just got yourself acquitted of what some folks would (rightly) define as murder. You’re a pariah to the African-American community and a good portion of the rest of the population. You may well be (not unjustifiably) the most hated man in America. Your 15 minutes of fame have revealed you to be a coward, a fool, and a murderer (except in the eyes of the state of Floriduh). So, what’s a guy just looking for a little peace and quiet to do? Well, DUH; you’re going to take your show on the road and head for Texas, where you and your gun will be celebrated as heroes.

Whatever your feelings about Zimmerman’s acquittal, I think we can all agree that Our (anti)Hero is going to have a tough go of things. No matter what he does or where he goes, people will recognize him for what he is- a coward and a murderer. He may not be guilty as defined by Floriduh’s Protect White Folks Stand Your Ground law, but (like that other shining example of Floriduh “justice,” Casey Anthony), but he can’t escape his conscience and the court of public opinion. That may not necessarily be good or right, but the evidence against Zimmerman was overwhelming. Regardless of Floriduh law, Zimmerman killed a young boy whose only crime was being African-American in possession of iced tea and Skittles.

I don’t hate George Zimmer Zimmerman, but I do hate what he did and that he got away with murder. I hope not a day goes by that he doesn’t think about how he killed an innocent young boy and the damage he did to Trayvon Martin’s family. I hope that regret stays with him until his last dying breath. He may be not guilty under Floriduh law, but if you believe in a higher power, you’re probably thinking that Zimmerman’s day of judgment is coming. Even if you don’t believe in a just, merciful, and/or compassionate God, one thing is certain- karma can be a real bitch.

The other lesson I hope Zimmerman learns is one I’ve learned the hard way- no matter how far you run, you can never get away from yourself. You can run to Texas or Iceland…but there you (and your conscience) will be.

I wish Zimmerman good luck with that; he’s probably going to need it.
