Everything that's wrong with modern Christianity in one picture

Apparently the folks at this church forgot about all the free healthcare and loaves and fishes Jesus gave out. Oh, and what do you think his stance was on capital punishment was? Right. Jesus was a socialist, you nutjobs! Now why don’t they pay taxes? Political action committees posing as churches. Something about a whip and the money changers comes to mind.

It always amazes me that Conservatives manage to believe they and they alone possess the imprimatur of the Almighty, that they are God’s Chosen Ones. I suppose if you’ve convinced yourself God is a Republican and that His son follows closely in His ideological footsteps, this misguided, self-absorbed belief might make some sense. I may not believe in God- benevolent or otherwise- but I do remember enough from my Sunday School days to remember that there’s no ideological litmus test for getting into the Kingdom of Heaven. It turns out that Heaven isn’t a red state.

The idea that being a Christian ipso facto means espousing Conservative political beliefs is as grossly erroneous as it is offensive and thoroughly self-absorbed. Preachers standing in their pulpits on Sunday mornings and openly endorsing Conservative candidates and ideology flies in the face of the life and teachings of the Jesus Christ they profess to revere and serve. They may have constructed a theology that supports their beliefs and prejudices, but it has little to do with Christ, who if anything was the original Liberal…with decidedly Socialist leanings.

Feeding the multitudes? Chasing the money-changers out of the temple? Healing the sick? I could go on, but you get the point, right? The life of Jesus Christ wasn’t about greed and selfish acquisitiveness. It wasn’t about taking food from the mouths of the poor. It wasn’t about taking care of #1 at the expense of everyone and everything else. And it certainly wasn’t condemning those trying to lead Christ-like lives as heretics.

Jesus cared for the sick and the lame. He clothed the poor. He fed the hungry. And yet Conservatives claim they own Christianity? Perhaps if they cracked their Bibles now and again they might learn some surprising things. They might learn, for instance that tolerance, charity, compassion, and a commitment to making the world a better place are some very fundamental Christian values.

When you have more in common with the money-changers in the temple and you’re blinded by pious self-righteousness, I suppose you’re going to feel justified in claiming the endorsement of the God you’ve created in your own image.

I’m not frightened of a God I don’t believe in, but His fan club sure scares the Hell out of me….
