Memo to Republicans: Being a Black President isn't a "high crime" or "misdemeanor"

THE WORST PERSON IN THE WORLD

(apologies to Keith Olbermann)

Rep. Kerry Bentivolio (R- MI)

Rep. Kerry Bentivolio told constituents at a town hall Monday that it would be a “dream come true” to write a bill to impeach President Barack Obama, but so far he doesn’t have enough evidence. The Michigan Republican answered a question at a local Republican club meeting in Birmingham on Monday from a woman who asked about impeaching Obama and who will “stop this runaway train that we have in the White House.”…. “If I could write that bill and submit it, it would be a dream come true,” Bentivolio replied, according to video of the event posted to YouTube on Tuesday. The congressman said he “can’t stand” Obama, but he respects the office of president…. “I feel your pain, I know. I stood 12 feet away from the guy and listened to him, and I couldn’t stand being there. But because he is president, I have to respect the office, that’s my job,” Bentivolio said.

Free speech being what it is, many intellectual and/or moral midgets are left to spew their ignorance as they see fit. (Some would say that description fits me…such is the beauty of free speech and expression, eh?) So it is with Kerry Bentivolio, a Republican Congressman best known for being a legislative nonentity at best and an ignorant, reactionary Right-wing troll at worst. I follow politics pretty closely, and I’d never even heard of Bentivolio before. Given that his most impactful contribution has been…wait for it…nope, I got nothin’…bleating about impeachment seems more a desperate plea for attention (Lookitme!! Lookitme!!) than anything. So now Bentivolio is best known for his abject hatred of The Black Guy in the White House ©…not that he’s a racist or anything. Mama would be So proud….

The thing I find so thoroughly offensive about Bentivolio and his fellow Junior Birdmen is the willingness to toss around the idea of impeaching the President with the same ease with which they order a Happy Meal. They bleat impotently about how the President has “broken the law,” or “violated the Constitution”…and yet they never seem to be able to provide specific examples. To be sure, the President has been behind policy initiatives the impeachment crowd dislikes to the point of foaming at the mouth, but that doesn’t mean impeachment should be considered an available option for the minority party. You lost the last election; that doesn’t mean you get to impeach the President because you’re sore losers.

Impeachment is an option the Founding Fathers intended to be used only in the case of demonstrable Presidential malfeasance, or “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Unfortunately, Republicans seem to view impeachment as a legitimate tool to be used against a President they despise. It’s a cynical, anti-democratic, and thoroughly Machiavellian approach, but when you care more about winning than in doing what’s best for the country….

Here’s a news flash for those who think the idea of impeaching Barack Obama is perfectly reasonable and appropriate: Presidenting While Black doesn’t begin to rise to the level of “high crimes and misdemeanors.” If Conservatives have specific, supportable examples of how they believe the President has committed crimes or violated the Constitution, they’re free to lay them out. The problem, of course, is that Conservatives have nothing- except an abject, fiery hatred of The Black Guy in the White House ©. There’s no correct or appropriate way to impeach a President for being the wrong color and/or a Democrat. Racism and rage aren’t reasons to impeach a sitting President.

Can we please get back to doing the Sheeple’s business? Or did you come to Washington simply to burn it down? As if I need to answer that….

WE DESERVE BETTER.
