Today's nominee for Headline of the Year

(Yes, I realize that today is the 12th anniversary of 9.11…and no, I’m not going to write about it. I’ve said everything I have to say over the past 12 years, and I don’t particularly care to reopen that wound yet again. I’m sure there will be no lack of those ready, willing, and able to hold forth about the worst day in this country’s history. They’re free to add what they will to the public discussion; as for me, it all feels rather perfunctory and reflexive. That’s why I’m choosing a different path. I wanted to find something that makes me laugh. If some consider that heretical, so be it…but I hope you’ll find this as amusing as I did.)

The school district in Little Rock, Ark. has announced plans for a dress code that will require teachers to wear underwear. Every single day. Female teachers will have to wear bras, too. An Aug. 29 letter from the Little Rock School District’s Office of the Superintendent to all employees explains that the dress code will officially go into effect in the fall of 2014…. “Foundational garments shall be worn and not visible with respect to color, style, and/or fabric,” the letter reads. “No see-through or sheer clothing shall be allowed, and no skin shall be visible between pants/trousers, skirts, and shirts/blouses at any time.”

When I first saw this, I was struck by the idea that The Daily Caller would find this sort of thing to be newsworthy. Then again, sex sells, and most any male with any degree of honesty would admit that there was at least one teacher they were hot for during their school days. We love titillation, and it doesn’t get more titillating for a male student than fantasizing about a teacher. I wanted to do my 10th-grade homeroom teacher…not that my 16-year-old self would have had a clue as to what to do with Mrs. Arnold. Still, I was a walking meatsack full of teenage hormones, and I wanted to do things I didn’t fully understand to her. There’s no disputing the truth that teachers having sex with students is as inappropriate as it is unethical and immoral, but we might as well own up to the reality that it’s an almost universal male sexual fantasy.

How this is all news worthy is beyond me, but the idea that a school district needs to

  1. remind it’s female teachers of the need to wear underwear, and
  2. that school isn’t where you troll for your next sexual conquest

seems as if it should be self-evident. I suppose it’s a sad commentary on the state of our collective maturity and professionalism, that a school district would feel it necessary to remind teachers to wear underwear and NOT wear see-through clothing. #DUH

What I want to know is who’s going to be in charge of doing underwear checks??
