Bill Donohue going nuclear: I've seen this movie before

Bill Donohue, the president and possible sole member of the Catholic League, has called for HBO to cancel Real Time With Bill Maher after the most recent show featured…Dan Savage, who very offensively and unfairly suggested that Catholic priests do sex on children. Donohue, who has a history of downplaying sexual abuse by priests, is likely to be about as successful in getting Bill Maher off the air as he was in his epic battle against Jon Stewart last year. We predict that in two weeks, after nothing has happened to Bill Maher, Donohue will declare victory and ask for some donations to continue his important work of complaining about the Simpsons.

I’ve written a good deal (none of it complimentary) about walking rage-fest Bill Donohue over the years, and I’ve gotta say that if Donohue’s a Christian, I’m going to start chanting “Hail Satan!!” at every possible opportunity. If your flavor of Christianity is heavy on rage, intolerance, and willful ignorance of inconvenient truths, I’d submit that you might want to dust off that Bible and do some reading. You clearly have no idea what your Lord and Savior allegedly taught.

As for the Catholic League, I’m beginning to wonder if it’s not a figment of Donohue’s imagination designed to legitimize his pontificating and angry, rabid hyper-religiosity. One of the most hateful, intolerant, and rage-addicted English-speaking bipeds on our shores, Donohue is every bit the Christian Adolf Hitler was. Yes, I went there. Donohue knows nothing of Christian love, charity, and tolerance, and if you’ve seen the man in full flower, you know that the reference to a murderous homophobic dictator is pretty much spot on.

Instead of focusing so intensely on his fear of and epic disgust for all things gay, he’d do well to take a look at what’s happening in his own theological back yard. Or, in the case of the Catholic Church’s long-running tolerance and condoning of pedophile priests, NOT happening. The Church continues to sweep their dirty little problem under the rug. I’d submit that Donohue’s outrage over Maher’s comments have more to do with the desire to gloss over the ugly truth of what’s happening in his church.

I have no problem granting Donohue the right to his beliefs, though I’m not at all certain which Bible he gets them from. Perhaps if he could learn that vein-popping rage is not an effective debate technique, it might be easier to take him seriously. Rather than blithely ignoring the ugly truth about the Catholic Church, perhaps Donohue could harness his seemingly infinite rage and use it to shine a light on the problem and demand the Vatican clean house. Of course, that would require some introspection and rational thought, things which he’s demonstrated himself patently incapable of. Why think and evaluate when you can explode and vent your spleen at someone willing to honestly bring the problem out into open discussion?

I think Donohue’s looking at this from the wrong perspective. Perhaps it’s time Bill Donohue was taken off the air.
