Moms Demand Action will mark the one-year anniversary of the tragic shooting in Newtown, Connecticut, with No More Silence, a campaign to honor the lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary, and to show our resolve never to be silent again about the epidemic of gun violence. Join us. Participate in our week of action, create a paper bell craft, and mark the day of the anniversary with dozens of “No More Silence” events all across the country. At each of these events, we will ring bells to remember victims of gun violence, and to demonstrate our commitment to be vocal and persistent in working toward common-sense gun reform.
Sandy Hook was supposed to change the dialogue about guns in America. It was supposed to provide the momentum to beat back the gun nuts who view mass shootings and the murder of children as merely the cost of freedom. It was supposed to give rise to a new day in the battle to create common sense gun control. December 14th was supposed to provide a cause to rally around.
Sadly, as has happened so many times in the past, Adam Lanza’s murderous rampage led to little in the way of concrete action. Sure, a couple states toughened their gun laws, but several more loosened theirs, so in the end we took a step backwards. In the wake of the tragedy in Newtown, the NRA reasserted their intransigence and inhumanity. Gun nuts from coast to coast went to absurd lengths to demonstrate their commitment to their absolutist, inhuman, and just plain wrong interpretation of the 2nd Amendment. What was supposed to provide the impetus for positive change instead became an opportunity for gun nuts to demonstrate that they care far more about their “rights” than they do human life. Hey, when it’s not your son or daughter leaving their school in a body bag, what’s the problem, right?
Some may find reasons to criticize Moms Demand Action’s ad for being an “overly emotional” appeal, but what could be more emotional and heart-wrenching than having to bury a child? With 26 school shootings since Sandy Hook, it’s clear little has changed…and that’s exactly what gun nuts demand. Congress still refuses to take meaningful action to protect Americans from gun violence, and the debate is controlled by those who worship Guns über Alles.
Hey, if you can’t walk into a Walmart with an AR-15 slung over your shoulder, then we’re well down the path to a tyrannical government, right?
Until we shame gun nuts into admitting that they really don’t care about the murder of innocent children, that nothing will change. Then again, it’s probably too much to hope that they’re capable of feeling shame.
