Twitter is, of course, the place where people go to embarrass themselves in public. That’s just part of the day-to-day background noise. Throw in a national holiday, and you get all sorts of beautiful new opportunities to be an ass. Case in point, this tweet from conservative intellectual powerhouse Dinesh D’Souza, who’s thankful that America will survive Barack Obama even though D’Souza himself markets rhetoric about Obama being the death of America forever…. [N]ow the threat that Barack Obama poses to America is not that he’s an obsessive anti-colonialist who wants to ruin America so that America will become more like his beloved Kenya or something. Now, the threat is that Barack Obama is a grown-up version of a scary drug-crazed thug hologram that conservatives have erected over the grave of a dead seventeen-year-old.
You’d think that after four-plus years, Conservatives would have accepted the results of the 2012 election and resolved to spend their time and energy trying to figure out how to win in 2016. That was before The Black Guy in the White House © managed to upset the natural order of things. His only “crime” is being a (non-White) Democrat in the White House, but that’s evidently enough to provide some Conservatives with license to engage in all manner of spurious, racially-driven assaults on his character.
It seems no personal attack or effort at character assassination is too offensive or beyond the pale for Conservatives, especially when it can be camouflaged and sold as well-considered intellectual analysis. Dinesh D’Souza, one of the Far Right’s intellectual poster boys, is a pundit with a gift for taking himself and his thought processes WAY too seriously. Yeah, this holiday season I’m extremely thankful I’m not D’Souza, who somehow manages to confuse character assassination and cheap personal attacks with actual, honest-to-God debate. For those Conservatives who don’t know what I’m referring to, that’s where you make an argument and then proceed to support it with facts and data.
D’Souza may (allegedly) be a person of great intellect, but he’s demonstrated himself time and again to be a person of neither integrity or decency. For whatever reason, he’s identified Barack Obama as “the enemy,” thus justifying any and all manner of spurious and dishonest personal attacks. When you stoop to metaphorically stomping on the grave of a murdered 17-year-old boy, you’ve demonstrated yourself to be something just barely human. Then again, you’re considered a shining example of Conservative intellectualism, so why would you care what others think of your willingness to mangle the truth?
Besides, any REAL (i.e.- Fox News watching) American can tell you that objective, empirical truth is for losers and Liberals. It’s not what the truth actually is; it’s what you can convince the American Sheeple is true. And they’ll believe a spurious lie about Barack Obama before the truth even has a chance to wake up.
