John Cornyn: Enough propaganda and political porn can make even an empty suit look like a hero

(video courtesy of Theo Kaht)

Do you believe the social contract is thinly-veiled socialism? That compassion is for losers and Liberals? That the people best equipped to make decisions regarding female reproductive functions are White Conservative Christian males? That God’s a Republican? Then join Team Empty Suit and fight for a dumber, less tolerant America!!

First off, if you were able to make it through the two-and-a-half minutes of what’s basically the video equivalent of a hand job…well, congratulations. I watched because I was fascinated, in the same way one might be transfixed by a slow motion train wreck. It’s a masterpiece of over-the-top, shameless political pornography. That Cornyn couldn’t be bothered to recognize how fawning and just plain silly this ad is defies rational explanation. Cornyn’s arrogance and willingness to indulge his Fox News Channel view of the world is legendary. That he was willing to countenance such a shameless trip through the worst sort of Texas self-congratulatory mythology shows just how little he has to offer.

There’s a reason I refer to Sen. Cornyn as an empty suit. Try naming one thing of note that he’s accomplished during his tenure in Congress…or even prior to that during his career as a judge. Go ahead…I’ll wait.

No, really. Take your time….

Drawing a blank? Well, you shouldn’t feel bad. I lived in Texas for 10+ years (3,722 days…not that I was counting)…and I can’t name a single meaningful accomplishment…and perhaps that’s what accounts for his popularity. Texans, especially the Red Meat Conservative types, really only care that a politician faithfully parrots the accepted Right-wing talking points. Accomplishments are nice, but of far greater import is the ideological/religious litmus test that any successful Texas politician must pass.

It’s not what you do; it’s what you say and the fervor with which you insult our illegitimate, Kenyan-born, Islamofascist, socialist, Libtard, atheist, America-hating President.

Texans, particularly the reflexively Conservative ones, have an unfortunate habit of perpetuating the myth that the Lone Star State is just this side of “God’s Country.” They’ll portray themselves as independent, self-sufficient, and unwilling to compromise with lesser being (i.e.- those unfortunate enough not to be from Texas). That little if any of it is true is beside the point, because Conservative Texans use the mythology and arrogance to paint themselves and those who represent them as more moral and decisive than mere mortals (non-Texans).

There’s an old Texasism that perfectly describes Cornyn, who’s all puffery and propaganda with no substance to back any of it up. Cornyn could be fairly described as “all hat and no cattle.” It’s a pejorative directed at someone who wraps themselves in the trappings and mythology of Texas’s frontier history and cowboy culture but is as much cowboy as Richard Simmons is a free safety.

That Cornyn’s campaign was reduced to producing a 2:33 video handjob says just about all you need to know about the Senator and his accomplishments. John Cornyn’s the very definition of an empty suit. He gets his “facts” from Fox News Channel, he faithfully parrots Right-wing talking points, and his attacks on the President sound as if they were cribbed from Newsmax and WorldNut Daily.

I’m looking forward to Cornyn’s primary contest against Steve Stockman (R-Cuckoo’s Nest), the Tea Party darling who wouldn’t recognize a fact if it showed up with a pair of kneepads and a tube of AstroGlide. It could well be the first completely fact-free campaign in the history of our Republic. And the sheeple of Texas will revel in it.

Empty Suit vs. Empty Head. Should be entertaining, no?
