What's next, children sitting on Satan's lap during Christmas?

Bryan Fischer of the American Family Association said Tuesday that a proposed Satanic monument in Oklahoma was not just a harmless prank.

“People don’t believe in Satan,” he remarked on his radio program. “That is really one of the major problems here. People just laugh at this. They think, oh, it is harmless, isn’t that cute? Kids sitting up in the lap of this Satanic statue — doing what — sitting on the lap of Satan for ‘inspiration and contemplation.’”

“They think it is harmless,” Fischer continued. “Well, it is not. I mean, that is a representation of Satan. That is often the way he manifests himself to people when he wants them to see what he kind of looks like symbolically, that is how he shows up, this goat with the horns and all that. So, it is not a laughing matter. It is not an innocent, harmless thing.”

The New York City-based Satanic Temple offered to build a monument at the Oklahoma Statehouse after conservative Christians erected a Ten Commandments display on capitol grounds.

On Monday, the group unveiled its proposed design: A 7-foot-tall goat-headed Baphomet figure sitting on a stone slab.

The Satanic Temple has raised more than $22,000 on the website Indiegogo for construction of the monument.

“All funds will go toward the cost of constructing and erecting the monument. Donors must be aware of the possibility that the monument offer may be rejected or refused by the Oklahoma City Council prior to any construction. If Oklahoma City refuses to allow us to donate a monument, all funds will go toward efforts to appeal or contest the rejection, and/or place another Satanic monument in another relevant location,” the group explains on the crowdfunding website.
