Another day, another shitwit with a gun going off his nut and very publicly shooting a bunch of holes in a bunch of innocent unarmed people somewhere in America. Okay, this actually happens every day, but Sunday’s shooting in Kansas City is getting the media attention so let’s talk about it for a minute. The accused shooter is one Frazier Glenn Miller, who also goes by the name Frazier Glenn Cross, and who has a long history of involvement with the white supremacist movement. Miller allegedly shot to death a doctor and his teenage grandson in the parking lot of the Overland Park Jewish Community Center and then an as-yet-unidentified woman at the nearby Village Shalom, a Jewish retirement community (the two dead at the JCC were reportedly Methodists — for a guy who hates Jews, Miller sure sucks at identifying them). And as he was put into a police car, he shouted “Heil Hitler” for the cameras.
Another day, another pinhead thinking a gun is the PERFECT way to compensate for his “shortcomings,” legion though they may be. ‘Course, this sort of thing is so frequent these days that we can safely calls are already being made to arm the staff and residents of retirement communities.
Yeah, grandpa’s wheel chair would be perfectly suited to mounting an M-60 machine gun or a 155mm howitzer…because more guns and more firepower can only make us safer…amiright??
Of course, the last thing gun nuts want to have to do is to defend themselves yet again from the silly, frequently debunked “more guns = more freedom” argument. They also don’t want to see the debate about gun control slip from their clutches, so the best way to deflect attention is to infer that the shooter was…GASP!!…a DEMOCRAT. Hey, if evil Bleeding Heart Liberals can shoot up two retirement homes…well, is NO ONE safe??
Is that not the best argument EVER for arming every man, woman, child, and Golden Retriever in America?? Except that his identified political identification is as inaccurate as it is meaningless.
Perhaps it’s that gun nuts know in their heart of hearts that they’re on the losing side. Their intransigence is directly responsible for thousands of innocent, needlessly dead Americans. Their insistence that their 2nd Amendment “rights” are sacrosanct, inviolable, and endorsed by Almighty God has made it impossible to reasonably and sensibly discuss the role of guns in our society. Their obstinate, unshakeable belief that they and only they are allowed to interpret the 2nd Amendment has allowed criminals, thugs, and terrorists to mow down innocent Americans because…freedom.
It’s true that freedom may not be free, but the price should not have to be thousands of innocent lives. How many more times will we have to mourn the innocent victims of a mass shooting? How much longer will gun nuts continue to insist that the only solution is to continue arming Americans with ever greater levels of firepower? And how long will good and decent Americans be force-fed the repeatedly disproven argument that more guns equals more safety?
More importantly, how much longer will Congress continue doing the bidding of the NRA and the gun industry, for whom they’ve created an almost legally untouchable status?
Of even more importance is the question of how long gun nuts will continue to distract and dissemble instead of dealing with the deadly consequences of their intransigence? When will they admit that the death toll, which grows daily, is the direct result of their refusal to entertain ANY sort of sensible gun control? I’m not even talking about taking guns from patriotic, God-fearing ‘Murricans, much as I believe the time has come to have that discussion. I’m talking about discussing why an American civilian should have the right to walk into a Walmart with an AR-15 slung over their shoulder? Why should the “right” to own a high-capacity magazine be thought integral to the most basic rights allowed to Americans?
When will reasonable people stand up and scream “ENOUGH!!!”? When will it be possible for sensible people to reasonably discuss how to stop the bloodshed? I want to take your guns, but I understand that will never be a remote possibility. With that in mind, you’d think that we could negotiate a meeting place somewhere in the middle?
Or would you rather continue the dissembling and screaming about your “rights” while ever more Americans die from gun violence?
Memo to gun nuts: While you’re dithering and dreaming up new ways to block a reasonable discussion, somewhere in the neighborhood of 30 Americans will perish from gun violence today. Much of that is preventable…but all you care about are your precious “rights” under your narrow, inflexible interpretation of the 2nd Amendment.
I could care less if Frazier Glenn Miller voted Democratic, Republican, or Flying Spaghetti Monster. His political leanings are of no importance. His actions are a much different story, and Conservatives and their gun nut base are (once again) working to defuse the outrage by deflecting attention onto a pointless issue.
