Arrogance, ignorance, and hatred: A recipe for nullification (or not)

Utah Politician Trestin Meacham is fasting in protest to same sex marriage. Utah courts ruled in favor of marriage equality, but Meacham says he will not eat until the state bans same sex marriage…. “I cannot stand by and do nothing while this evil takes root in my home,” Meacham says. “It is time for the State to stop wasting time. Our so-called conservative lawmakers need to show some courage and stand against this judicial tyranny. They need to exert the will of the people.”

Wow. Another bigot and hater so consumed by fear and ignorance that he’s threatening to do harm to himself until he’s validated and the “evil” he lives in mortal fear of goes away. Yawn….

I hesitate to devote time, energy, or column inches to Meacham’s self-righteousness and homophobia, but sometimes self-destruction in the name of being on the wrong side of history deserves to have the light of public ridicule focused on it. So it is with Meacham who, having not eaten since December 21st and lost 25 pounds, says he won’t eat until Utah disobeys the federal government and reinstates its ban on same-sex marriage. Clearly, in his mind the only opinion that matters on this issue is his own, and of course God is on his side. The Lord always is when it comes to those hate. Meacham is just arrogant and self-righteous enough to be convinced only direct action (like starving himself to death) can effect change and force the LGBT community to accept the second-class status God intended for them to inhabit.

For Meacham, it’s all about judicial tyranny, in that when a judge hands down a decision you disagree with, it’s tyranny, or “judicial activism.” When that judge’s decision dovetails with your ideology, it’s reasonable jurisprudence. What Meacham fails (or refuses) to recognize is that the law isn’t about fear, ignorance, hatred, or even emotion. It’s about doing the right thing based on the law. You don’t have to like it, but the rule of law is the reason this country has held together for almost 240 years…and you don’t get to ignore laws or court decisions you don’t like or that violate your “religious beliefs.”

The Supreme Court has ruled that nullification is unconstitutional, yet Meacham insists that Utah nullify the decision striking down its ban on same-sex marriage…and he won’t eat until they do. It seems there’s only one solution to this dilemma:

Let him starve to death. Seriously; he’s earned the opportunity

What Meacham is demanding is patently absurd and arrogant in the extreme. If he thinks that the State of Utah will cave and do the “right” thing so he doesn’t die from starvation, he should be given the opportunity to do just that. He couldn’t be considered a martyr- dying for hatred and self-righteousness is hardly a virtue- but he should be considered a fool willing to slowly commit suicide to make a point that’s not his to make.

If Meacham is so committed to the cause of hatred and self-righteousness that he’d starve himself to death…let him. We’ll call it natural selection at work, and he’ll be neither missed nor long remembered. Haters don’t make history; history is made in spite of them.
